I have stuck my toe into the puddle, and now I have a lot of questions. Almost everything I have learned about AR's is because if this forum. Is there a motorcycle forum that is to motorcycles as this place is to AR's?
Thanks! |

ADVrider.com is the ar15.com of adventure motorcycling. The wealth of knowledge there is impressive. There are thousands of motorcycle forums. ADVrider.com is in the top five. Whether you like it or not depends on what and how and why you ride. You can always Google "[MODEL OF BIKE] forum" as in "VTX forum" or "Sportster forum"... |
| Part of the problem is that I dont know exactly what I want. I know I dont want a cruiser. I would like an upright seating position and something with enough wind block that I could take it on short, medium, and even bit longer trips. I have been doing a lot of looking and the 2014 / 2015 Ninja 1000's look promising, especially with their easily attachable cargo bags in the back. But again, I really know nothing about bikes. |

Like others have said ADV is awesome, Its more a dirt and limited street site . Thumpers world is a good dirt site. All the manufacturers have related forums. Dont go cheap on gear, If you go over the bars at 60mph you will wish you had better gear. Its as addicting as guns |

Does not compute. A Ninja is fun, for about an hour until you're worn out. It's not upright in any way, and the windshield is pretty much a bug guard. You're probably looking for an Adventure bike (Kawasaki KLR, Suzuki V-Strom, BMW GS, Yamaha Super Tenere) or Sport Tourer (Yamaha FJR, Kawasaki Concourse, to a degree a Honda Goldwing). They have upright seating and all sorts of options for luggage. As mentioned before, advrider.com is the best place for Adventure bike info. I used to have a Suzuki DL650 V-Strom (Adventure bike), which was my first bike. The only reason I don't have it is to pay for my truck, otherwise it would still be in my garage. I have taken it on 6-hour trips covering about 300 miles, only stopping for gas and for lunch.

Just a thought, the Suzuki SV650 is a GREAT starter bike. It is a standard, it is reliable, it isn't too big, too small, too powerful, or too weak, plenty of parts, great mileage, great handling. I think $2,000 will buy them all day long at this time of year. This is coming from a guy who has never owned a Suzuki (but I would). I like the FZ6 (above), it may even be a slightly better bike, but don't think you can get a one anywhere as cheap as a SV.

I took delivery of the first FZ-07 in my state this summer. Great bike, zero wind protection though. |

I find I prefer the leaned forward riding position of a sporty bike when riding at highway speeds, say 60 mph and above. At those speeds, the wind is strong enough that it begins supporting your upper body as you're leaned forward into it. It takes the weight off your back and leg muscles.
On an upright bike, at highways speeds, the wind is trying to push your upper body back, so you're constantly supporting yourself upright with your stomach and arm muscles. More fatiguing. Unless you have a big windshield of course. |

I'm on the dry side of WA, if you are in north ID, I can give you plenty of ideas on places to ride.
As a brand new rider, yes, a Ninja 1000 will be a bit much. It is an Excellent bike, but not for a new rider. Also to the poster who complained about Ninja riding position, you are thinking of the ZX10 and ZX6 Ninja's. Those are the full on sport bikes. The Ninja 300, Ninja 650 and Ninja 1000 have a much more upright seating position and are suitable for all day. Yes....Go to ADVRider. Not strictly limited to ADV type bikes, you can find info on everything there. While you are researching on the different styles of bikes, take the MSF class and get your license. Even after riding bikes 30+ years, I got something out of the class and several friends of mine have taken it as rank beginners and gone on to be quite good riders. |

Another vote for a V strom 650 here. Great all around bike, handles the freeway easily and decent off road capabilities, though it's no dirt bike. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff215/mason1251/Mobile%20Uploads/photo1_zpsb53c4f7d.jpg Hey look at that. An assault bike.

Another contender for a great first bike is the Kawasaki Versys...great platform that meets all your needs, can do everyone but is a master of nothing. I'd put in the class with the Vstrom 650 but slightly more road-oriented. Great aftermarket, cheap, super reliable and fun as hell. I just put down a deposit on one, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I've had a DL650, KLR, SV650, Vstrom 1000, Honda 996, etc, but I really prefer the adventure bikes for a litany of reasons.
