I have a Mossberg 500 that only take 2 3/4" shells. Can I change out the barrel for one that takes 3" shells? Will it work properly??

THanks

I don't think the elevator assy would feed them, too long.

Usually the ejection port is not long enough to accomadate the longer fired shell, so while a 3" shell might go in and fire OK, it might not eject.
I know this is the situation with a Rem 1100 or 870.
A bottom eject like the Mossberg might work, I haven't tried it.
Shouldn't hurt to try it.  Didn't hurt my 1100

How can you tell if your 500 will take 3's, without trying to cram one in there?

Call Mossberg and ask if it's a 3" magnum receiver.

There is no difference in a 500 reciever for 2.3/4 and 3 in guns.
Mossbergs are not bottom eject.
THe lifter is the only 500 lifter there is.

THe only thing close to a "magnium reciever" is the 835 and it takes up to 3.5 in shells but its bbl will also fit on a 500 reciever with a mag tube change and also the 500 tube and bbl will fit on a 835 reciever,
the 590 is just a 500 with an 835 mag tube and 3 in chamberd bbl.

SO your answer is yes, put a 3" bbl and bang away.

What are you going to do with it that you will need 3" shoulder busters for?

You need the larger shot load the 3" rounds have for the fast moving zombies.  This gives you a larger shot pattern and therefore a greater chance of successfully hiting the brain on the faster moving targets.

The smaller 2 3/4" rounds are fine though for the slower traditional zombies.

Turkeys, crows, yotes.
Stuff like that. Not that it is 100% necessary but it is nice to have the option. And if I am going to build this gun up like I want I dont want to regret it later down the road.

Mine is 2 3/4 and 3 inch. Never had a prob either way. I have had my Mossberg since the 80's.

If you are letting the zombies close enough to use a shotgun, you're doing it wrong.

Shotgun is last resort in zombieland.

I guess it is more of a hypothetical question as I dont have the gun yet. I was at a few shops to day and some say 2 3/4 and some say 2 3/4 or 3"
I will probably swap barrels anyway so I was wondering if I could use a 2 3/4 gun. I want a beat up one for cheap for a project..

Thanks

it is stamped on the barrel the size shells it will accept.
