Smaller or less expensive items, such as the coasters you posted about, might be an interesting and less obvious things to try and get ahold of. You could put them all in one 80s themed room. Another idea would be to set them around an entire house and then when friends or family members come over, see if they notice those vintage items placed amongst more contemporary items. Young people probably wouldn't think anything of those items, but Gen-X and older visitors may stop and comment on those things. Just off the top of my head, here is a small (not exhaustive) list of odds and ends that you might look for. I have no idea where you'd find originals of these items, other than perhaps ebay or getting lucky at a garage or estate sale of older folks.
You might also display an original Bell touch tone phone along with an old answering machine with the tape or tape cassette installed, even if they aren't functional. I'll post up some videos featuring these items below. I'm not sure to what to say about furniture. Waterbeds were pretty common, but IMO that wouldn't be worth the hassle. I'm sitting right next to a table and lamp that I acquired in the early 80s, but I couldn't say what, if anything, stands out about them as compared to equivalent current production tables and lamps. I'll post up some videos featuring 80s home interiors FWIW. Of course movies and TV shows (especially sitcoms) from the 80s should provide a fair amount of ideas and examples. If anyone else reading this has some ideas then please post them up in this thread, preferably with pics and/or videos (vintage videos and ads are always cool). This can be something fun to explore.
