What is the difference between a standard mini 14 and the ranch rifle?

I think one is made for easier optics install.

I believe it is the mounting slots for a scope.

The down side is that with the ability to mount scope rings, you get a flimsy POS flip-up/hinged rear sight.

The ranch rifle has flip up peep hole sites.  The mini 14 has mechanical iron sites.  If you have a ranch rifle, you should consider a scope or something along that line as the flip up ones are not much better than what you get on a cheap .22.

sights and integrated scope mount.

FWIW, the newer models are one in the same i do believe.
