One of the things that I got to do as a company commander was name all platoon and company level operations before they went up to the battalion S-3 and beyond. My all time favorite was for a route clearance mission we did with our combat engineers. The majority of the roads in my operational environment were unimproved and on top of embankments. I was very concerned with the emplacement of deep buried IEDs taking out one of my squads as they traversed the OE on a daily basis. The engineers had

ground penetrating radar available so after coordination with their CO we built a regularly occurring joint operation with his C-IED elements and one of my infantry platoons.

Since we were looking for DEEP buried IEDS with their ground PENETRATING radar is was only natural that the name of the operation was...

Operation Deep Penetration

I got called on using a sexually suggestive operation name by the battalion S-3 because one of the female Soldiers at brigade brought it up during a BUB. I feigned ignorance and explained how I named it. The light of realization came to his face and he apologized and said the he worked with a bunch of dirty minded perverts.
So, what was your favorite operation name?

My favorite is Operation Just Cause (1989 invasion of Panama) because it sounds like we did it "just 'cause".

OPERATION INFINITE JUSTICE!

Too bad it sucumbed to PC bullshit so quickly.

ETA: Another favorite was OPERATION EL DORADO CANYON (the air raid on Lybia in 1986). Awesome-sounding.

PRAYING MANTIS
URGENT FURY
DESERT SHIELD
DESERT STORM
OVERLORD
BOLERO
DOWNFALL
OLYMPIC

Big, powerful-sounding "We're gonna kick your asses into next month" names. Now it's all "Freedom" this and "Freedom" that. GAG!

One of our ops was called Big Money because we were going after a financier. One of the new requirements was that all operations have an Arabic name. So my S-3 was trying to get an accurate translation for big money from one of the battalion terps. His initial translation was essentially for a giant dollar bill, like the big check you get when Publishers Clearinghouse comes over. It took awhile for him to get the concept of a big pile of money.

During URGENT FURY, a general at a press conference described the airborne deployment as "a pre dawn vertical insertion."

Me, I always thought that was something you did with your wife or girlfriend.
