I am going to attend my son's graduation from boot camp next month and they have on-base lodging, so I email them to get rates and they send back this reply:

"Sir I would need phone number ssn, zip, and the rate for a room DBL ROOM IS
$36.00 AND $5.00 FOR YOUR GUEST."

First of all, it looks like a 3rd grader wrote this response and second, WTF do they need my SSN for?

The same reason they take all our SSNs.  I dunno, its the military way.

Because It's the Military, that's your name.

That's the way .mil runs.  Of course the privacy statement will read that giving your social is optional, but failure to provide it could result in lack of services.

Gotcha!  That was my first thought, but since I had never stayed in one, I wanted to verify it before I gave it out.  Thanks for the help!

This is why the .gov gave you a SSN.  So that if you owe taxes they can add it to you room fee.

Yeah they had that sign at the PX, that they needed your SSN to write a check. Giving your SSN was optional, but without it you couldn't use a check.
