What is the difference between Ultra II and regular compact flash cards?  Getting ready to order a Canon Rebel XTI and wanted some extra memory cards.  Does the kit come with a card?  I can't seem to find a clear answer on that.

read/write speed is the big difference.

SanDisk Standard CompactFlash® Features: * High transfer rate for fast copying and downloading

This SanDisk 1 Gigabyte Ultra II CompactFlash card has a minimum sustained write speed of 9 megabytes (MB) per second and a read speed of 10 MB per second.

This SanDisk Extreme III 1 Gigabyte CompactFlash Card  has a minimum of 20MB/second sequential write and read speed (based on SanDisk internal testing)

SanDisk Extreme® IV CompactFlash®  has extremely fast read/write speeds. (Up to 40MB/sec*)

The XTi kit as listed at B&H does not include a CF card.

Rob Golbraith's site has a plethora of information on Card Speeds, which is really the main difference.  I use 50x Kingston cards and they are plenty fast for my needs.  If you shoot a lot of bursts, then higher speed cards help.  Otherwise the place you'll notice the most is in copying to/from your computer.

The Rebel (300D, not the xti) came with a 32mb card, which is pitiful for a 6mp camera, let alone a 10mp.

I was going to do the 2 or 4 gig card.  There's only a $10-$15 difference between the regular and the Ultra.

Is there much difference between brands?  PNY seems to be cheaper than Sandisk.

card speed is not going to make too much of a difference for that particular camera....
