| I'm thinking of building a ridiculously accurate 10/22 rig (custom stock, Volquartsen trigger, excellent barrel, etc) but was wondering what the maximum effective range is going to be. Anyone have a rough idea? Is 200 yards out of the question? |
| Max effective range for what? That is the question. Shooting a KD course at 200 Yrds. punching paper is no problem, when you can adjust sights accordingly. Taking a snap shot at rabbits, squirrels, etc. is different. For defensive use, don't bother. Just my oppinion. |
You can build a rifle and buy good enough ammo to shoot 200 yards accurately. At that distance the wind is going to be your biggest problem. Learn to love shooting in the wind. Anyone can shoot good on a calm day, The best shooters can shoot good on any type of day. |

At 200 yards you are putting a quarter inch of elevation on your rear sight over 25 yards on a 28" target rifle. The Standard and HiSpeed bullets really don't hold groups past 250-275 yards. Fed Lightning or something like that cuts the mustard at 300, so I've heard. Havent tried it for myself. I have an old Win 52 with the Enfield type ladder sight that is right on, range wise, out as far as 200 yards with standard velocity stuff during the summer. Dial in 175 yards, or 25 yards, and you will be hitting the 10 ring. |
| With my precision boltgun shooting good ammo (Lapua or Ely some RWS) 200 yards is still well within the death zone for squirrels. 24" heavy barreled Anschutz on a pedestal. i use a 45X Leupold target scope. my AR15 conversion, Shilen barrel, will probably do almost as well but i will not know until the squirrels come out next month. At 35 yards it can hold ten out of ten at .25" or better, no wind. for wind shooting i switch to the heavy 45gr Lapua. Oh and all my .22lr are used almost always with a suppressor. |
