f(x)=5x-9
g(x)=(x+5)/9 Find f(g(x)) The answer is (5x-56)/9 I cannot for the life of me figure out how they get this awnser. |

I am always too late for these math threads. I just want to know why only the algebra students ever post up their problems. How come we never get any multivariable calc questions or anything? Maybe we know it would just turn into airplane on a treadmill? Because it's hard to type out all the partial derivatives? Besides, anyone smart enough to be taking advanced calc should be smart enough to be dubious about any answer ARF would produce (especially after the airplane/ treadmill threads |

Sounds great- until you see the airplane/treadmill version 2.0 threads with people posting fluid dynamic equations while still being unable to draw free-body diagrams |

Seriously, some of my engineering problems are ridiculously complicated. Anything that requires more than a page to work out should not be allowed. I would really love to keep wasting time on arfcom, but I have calculus and physics to tend too. |

5* ((x + 5)/9) -9 (5x + 25)/9 -9 5x/9 + 25/9 -81/9 5x/9 -56/9 (5x -56)/9 +1 Ill try to get some diff EQ, transport, and thermo dyn probs up here. I fucking hate thermo and diff EQ. Fuck all of that shit along with fluid dynamics and the endless other classes engineers are subjected too. |

That's the kind of stuff that prepares you for the real world. Do you think those guys at the Manhattan Project scribbled all the requisite calculations on the back of a bar napkin? ETA: I love your sig. Sowell is the man. |

ETA: I love your sig. Sowell is the man. We have Ti-89s now. The less time we spend perfecting math that can be done by a machine, the more time we (as students) can spend perfecting the finer arts of the sciences and engineering fields. It'd really free up a LOT of time to go more in-depth into our own fields of study for a 4 year degree. |

Send us some harder math problems. Ask and you shall receive. Here is a problem from way in the back of my calculus book. I tried to format it the best I could. You are obviously going to have to do a little work. Solve the differential equation. 2((d^2y/(dx^2))+((dy)/(dx))+(3y)=0 |

You are doing composition functions, putting one equation inside another.
Every time you see "x" in the function called f, replace it with the entire function (formula) called g. The "thing" inside the parenthesis in f(x) is the input, and when you input a number in for x and simplify, you get the output of the function. In this case, you are inputting not a number, but the entire g equation, and you then do not get a number as an answer, but a whole new equation. next you'll be learning about inverse functions. ask me how I know. |
