The great lurker here asks the brains at arfcom for help, my algebra skills are terrible and my boss has asked me to figure this out:

(X/185,000)^.7 = .1919

Solve for X

Can anyone help me with this?

thanks, Mike

Raise both sides of the equation to the 1/0.7 power, then multiply both sides of the equation by 185,000.

17498. Goal seek is your friend.

ETA
Or enter =(0.1919^(1/0.7))*185000 into Excel

Slide rule will make solving the .7 root easier.

Thank you for the reply, but I am not even sure how to raise both sides by the power.

I am a complete idiot in math

You're shitting us, right?

Your boss asked you to solve a math problem, and so you turned to the internet?

I think your boss got the answer to the question he was really asking.

You're typing on a computer, so I assume you have a calculator at hand...

ln [ (X/185,000)^.7 ] = ln (.1919)

.7 * ln[(X/185,000)] = ln (.1919)

ln(X/185,000) = ln(.1919)/.7

ln(x) - ln(185,000) = ln(.1919)/.7

ln(x) = ln(185,000)+ln(.1919)/.7

e^ln(x) = e^[ln(185,000)+ln(.1919)/.7]

x = e^[ln(185,000)+(ln(.1919)/.7)]      <- exact answer

x = 17498.2       <- approximate

(Note: the .7 exponent in the initial equation is there–– it got cut-off in the scan)

Mike- Next time, do your own homework. To make up for us doing this one for you, "assign yourself" another problem of the same type that wasn't in your original assignment.

1. go to wolframalpha.com

2. type solve (X/185,000)^.7 = .1919

3. enroll yourself in a first year math course at night

4. profit

If you don't know how to solve this problem explicitly, then use trial and error.  Do something, in other words.
