When I proposed to my wife I did it in a fancy restaurant after a Broadway Play in NYC. My brother is going to propose to his longtime GF next Tuesday on her birthday. He wants to take her through a local park here that has a holiday festival of lights type of display that you drive through. It goes through the whole park. It is pretty awesome. They do a great job every year.

Well as they get to the end of the light display he wants to give her the ring and propose to her in the car. I say proposing in the car is not a good place to do it. It needs to be in doors so he can do the whole get down on one knee thing. You cant do that in the car.

So I told him he should bring her out to eat and do it or take her back home after the light display and do it. He knows she will say yes but its something she will always remember so I think he should do it right. He says the car will do.

How did you married guys do it? Do you think his idea is good? Maybe I should MYOB? I dunno.

I bet she doesn't spend 1/10th the time thinking about what location will be used to announce their divorce

I would say no to the car idea.

Of course you're talking to a guy that proposed on the edge of a cliff after an 8 mile hike in 50 degree rainy weather...

He can hold the door for her while she gets in the car and then get on his knee and ask her.

That would blow me away as I would never think anything about my b/f holding the car door for me.

The first time I proposed to my wife it was about -10 deg F outside, I had no plan for our life (I found out later she's big into planning), I had no ring, I hadn't talked to her dad, it was dark, it was less than romantic, etc. - Response was very much a "Negative Ghostrider the pattern is full."

The second time I proposed to her it was at the same spot (+/- 3 feet), about the same temperature, it was two weeks later, I had a plan for a good start at marriage, I still hadn't talked to her dad, I had an engagement ring from a candy dispenser, it was dark, and there were thousands and thousands of Christmas lights everywhere. I did get down on one knee, and froze myself to some ice on the granite sidewalk.

She said yes and that was 11 years ago on December 21 of this year. She was 19 and I was 21.

On our 10 year anniversary I asked her why she said no the first time and she said the following:

"Every woman has a different idea of what it will be like when she gets engaged. Some women want fireworks, some women want the promise of being treated like a queen, and some just want a big ass ring to show off. All I wanted is for you to tell me that you love me, that we're best friends, and that we'll take care of each other. That, and a little something I could hold in my hands to remind me I was really engaged."

pro tip: make sure you do it the way she wants... if not... you will NEVER hear the end of it.

The car idea is a definite bad idea.

Have him get to the end of the park, suggest getting out and walking to see some of the lights, then do it there. Outside, in the park, in the holiday lights, and in front of some witnesses.  Totally unexpected and a great setting.

Of course, with witnesses, he better be sure she'll say "yes."

Get her naked in the back seat of the car and then ask her to marry you.

Definitely.

I will never forget being at a Utah Grizzlies hockey game when a guy proposed to his date and she said no and ran out of the arena crying.

No way.

Not inside a vehicle.

Outside, on the knee.

If it has to be inside, then inside a building of some beauty/significance.
