I have a sony laptop that is approx 3yrs old. I fear the HD is about shot in it. My dillema is this. The computer did not ship with a restore CD with a copy of windows on it, instead it was sent with a recovery partition on the HD. So if I go to install a new HD, I will either have to order a restore cd from sony for about $30, or buy a whole new copy of XP. I have heard however, that one can make his own own recovery CD from windows. Does anyonwe know how to do this?, or has anyone heard of this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I've been out of sony tech support long enough to have forgotten exactly where it is, but there should be a program somewhere to create them from windows hopefully it was fixed between my leaving and your buying the computer when I was still there the program did not work, sony knew it didn't work, and they still charged people for the cds claiming that the users should have made their own from the program |
if the machine was under warranty.. they will 2nd day the recovery cds to you. i've done that NUMEROUS times. sometimes they ship two sets of cd's

| My advice would be to use a program such as Norton Ghost to send the image of your pc/laptop to cd, dvd, or external device. Then, replace the drive and restore the pc/notebook to the current setup. It is my favorite way of succeeding at correcting your problem on my pcs. |

Thanks for all of the advice. I haven't been able to succeed in making a CD, I haven't even been able to find the option. The Norton Ghost option seems to be a good one. I have never used it though. Is there some sort of wizard in Norton Ghost to copy the whole OS partition to like an image file? How do I go about rebooting the PC with a single unformatted HD once I install the new one(without an OS CD)? Or do I have to use another PC with multiple drives to format and write the data to the new drive before installing it? I understand in theory what needs to happen, but can't quite get a grip on the overall logistics ![]() Thanks for any recommendations |
