Last night I was at the local watering hole with my young lady, since she likes Karaoke. One of the singers decided to dedicate a song to the victims of 9/11, and sung the National Anthem.

I, of course, stood with my hand over my heart, though I was one of only 3 people there who did. If that wasn't maddening enough, one of those 3 was throwing a Nazi straight-arm salute.

Question:

Did I do good by continuing to stand and not interrupt the proceedings by beating him to a pulp or using his skull to sharpen my Gerber, which I was carrying?

Or:

Should I be roundly chastised for NOT doing so?

Zeny didn't see the jerk, and couldn't understand why I was so effing mad, which made me madder. I still held my cool, and just left immediately thereafter.

I don't think the trouble from mopping the floor with this mope would be worth the trouble. Forget about the annoying law enforcement problems, you mighta broke your gerber, not that he would not have deserved it.

I had a little different situation- many years ago a buddy and I stopped in a bar, well I had a little trouble with juke box (drive, heck I can't run a juke box drunk). Anyway (I swear it's true) the first song was "Take me out to the Ballgame" at which time everyone stopped playing pool, drinking etc. and glared at us as I was obviously the dope who played this song. I was saved from whatever was going to happen next when the Anthem turned out to be the next song. Everyone stopped drinking etc and stood respectfully through the whole thing. I was surprised at that.

The last of my three songs was the wedding march-at this point a woman from the bar yelled "I've heard that one time too many." and unplugged the juke box.

(What kind of bar juke box has those three songs? [whacko])

The local bar isn't always the best place to find the communities upstanding citizens. I would have either ignored him for being the stupid bastard he was, or I would have went ahead and told him what a stupid bastard he was, depending on the number of "refreshments" I had partaken of.

I definately would not have started a bar brawl and then pulled my knife. That is a good way to either get killed by a person(s) with bigger/more knives, or kill someone yourself in the heat of the moment and end up in prison.

Hopefully I would do the same thing as you.....

I was just venting steam. There is NO WAY that I would pull a knife or ANY weapon on a person that wasn't trying to kill someone. I've carried a pistol for a living most of my adult life, and have had to draw down on someone exactly twice, and never had to pull the trigger. I use a weapon to SAVE lives, not take them.

I know I did the right thing by just leaving, as the owner saw the SOB and said nothing. It just wasn't as satisfying.

It just irritates me no end that someone could be such a bona-fide A-hole, and I had to swallow my pride in my country to keep the peace, and have that be the "correct" solution.

The unfortunate cost of living in a free society is having to endure other people exercising their right to act like an in bred, gin soaked, stupid self hating asshole! Good job of showing that you really are the superior person! Been there done that myself and yeah its hard to do the right thing but you don't want to lower yourself down to their level.

Just remember, this is another reason why America is such a great nation. That guy is still free to his opinion just as much as you are to yours. While I think his opinion sucks, he still has a right to it.

Of course he has the right to his opinion, bro, and I respect that. Messing with the National Anthem and a tribute to our dead, though, crosses the line of good taste and simply expressing your beliefs, in my humble opinion. There is a principle of "fighting words," if you recall. You will notice that I did nothing to interfere with him, or disrespect his beliefs. That doesn't mean I have to think he's a great guy.

I personally believe that he's a waste of precious oxygen.

Just one one of the downsides of living in our great country where everyone is free to express themselves - no matter how repugnant their views may be to the rest of us.

Ignore it and be proud of being a real American who stood up for the REAL reason.

BTW - I always get a lump in my throat and chills down my back whenever I hear it played.

Trivia time.....The traditional way to salute the flag was the extended right arm until the late thirties and the start of WW2, when the Nazi salute became the same. The hand over the heart began at that time, only to differ from the Germans....fullclip

See, that's what sucks about carrying. When you carry, you have to go outta your way to "turn the other cheek." Always play cool.

When unarmed, you can tell this scumbag what you *really* think of him! And hope he doesn't blast or slice you, but came in with something similar to the two fists you are armed with.

I personally think what that guy did was/is bullshit. HOWEVER, just cause i dont agree with what a person believes or does gives me the right to beat thier ass or cause an up roar over it. I think you did the right and mature thing kpel. You just made a perfect example of how mature, professional gun owners act. For that i thank you sir.

I would have done the same thing you did, and would still be as pissed as you are.

Like FLGreg I get choked up hearing it played and just about brings a tear to my eye when I think about all the people who gave their life defending this country and its freedoms so trash like that guy can openly disgrace it.
