I was given a log splitter that has sat unused for 10 years. I've gotten the engine running, but the pump is leaking fluid around the shaft. It's a Northern, Inc. S1012, anyone know if there are rebuild kits available; or should I just buy a new pump? |
|
If it's a Northern splitter, I would go to their website and see if a rebuild kit is available. If it's not, it's probably not something you want to screw with, and a new pump is the answer. They're pretty good in my experience with replacement parts and hydraulic component cross-matching. A new pump is probably $100.
You'll need the number on the pump, not the splitter, and I'd replace it with a two stage pump that kicks into high pressure when your wedge meets the log. Much faster. |

Guess I'll check around for the seal... The S1012 is the pump part #. I have no idea where the log splitter originated, but from the from brand "Northen, Inc." I would guess Northern Tool is a fair bet. It's a 2-stage 11gpm pump; I've sourced a few replacements at about $110 +shipping. |

Got an axe, a maul, and a wedge? I do. Rented the splitter anyway. I've got the meanest fucking oak in the world in my front yard seasoning right now. If I totaled up what that 3 cord of wood cost me I'd get really pissed, but it starts with a roof and goes up from there. I tried the wedge. I was gonna use the damn wedge. Once it was sunk decently, the next good whack just bounced it out. Oh, not hitting hard enough? I got a bigger dude than me by far to have a go. He just made it jump further out of the wood. I'm sure Abe Lincoln had a splitter. They just don't draw that into the cabin and farm scenes. Fuck all that hammering. |

Been toying with getting my own splitter, but not sure if it would be better to get a stand-alone or one that is powered off of a tractor PTO.
Is there any difference, other than price? I've seen some PTO-powered splitters at Tractor Supply, they seem to be about $500 cheaper than one with its own engine. LC |

LC I bought my splitter before I bought my tractor, and if my pump or engine dies on the splitter, I will just convert it to run off my tractor's hydraulics or PTO. If I didn't own one I would buy a tractor powered one. Depends on your tractor though, and how fuel efficient it is, and whether you don't mind having to have it wherever you make firewood. If it's part of your firewood plans already, definitely. If you would tow your splitter 30 miles and would rather not trailer up the tractor, probably not. I just want 1 less engine to deal with. Between the vehicles, the atv, the boat, the saws and trimmers and tillers and generators and lawn mowers and motorcycles, I've got too many damned engines to dink around with. |

That's pretty much my way of thinking also. But I generally haul the wood back home on a trailer or in my Deuce. Then I just take my time splitting it. Would rather not rent a splitter anymore, since I have a 30hp JD 870 to run the splitter with. LC |
