Easiest thing to do is download Ubuntu, burn it to a CD and reboot.  You will be able to play around with it without changing anything on your computer.

I've been running UBUNTU LINUX since ver.6.06

for general surfing, checking email, etc, it's really nice.

I'm personally a fan of using Debian instead of ubuntu for a number of reasons with stuff ubuntu has done over the years. Plus it is what ubuntu is based off of. A bunch of users have gone to mint as well due to some of ubuntu's actions.

With linux you have a good number of choices. Many of the distros are going to be based off redhat, Debian, or suse. Stick with one of the bigger distros and you will be fine.

Ubuntu or Mint would both be good choices for someone new to Linux.  Of the two, I currently prefer Mint, but YMMV.  I run Debian on a Thinkpad I picked up cheap, and it works great.

Ubuntu server. Just say no to retarded gui's. Ubuntu is basically debian.

I used to be a slackware guy. Still like FreeBSD.
