I've used Linux off and on over the years. My first distro was Slackware back in the mid-90's. I finally made the plunge and now 99% of the time use Linux. I love it. It's so much more stable, faster, and WAY more user friendly than years ago. I run Ubuntu 8.04. I do preserve a dual-boot with Windows XP for Microsoft Visual Studio, but that's it. I hope Linux gains ground and takes more of the market share, it really IS a better operating system.

Cool!

Check out VMware Workstation for running Windows, no need to ever reboot

Using VirtualBox to run a MS-DOS 6.22 system for some x86 Assembly program using Turbo Assembler. I have an active Windows XP installation, which is a bit... quirky in VMware.

Only thing I ever use Windows for now is gaming, and that's not very often.

I tried to switch over via dualboot a few years back but I was playing WoW so much I didn't have time to try to learn Ubuntu.  Maybe I'll give it another shot.  I remember I couldn't figure out how to install programs in Ubunto so I got annoyed at that.

I believe you can actually get WoW to run under Wine in Linux. Wine is a Linux program that lets you run some Windows programs in Linux.

Yeah, I don't play WoW anymore but I remember Wine.  It was just easier to boot into Windows.  I got motivated tonight so I'm downloading Ubuntu.  I have an older CPU I might throw it on to learn it.  Do you know if the regular Ubunto download includes the live cd software?

The standard "Desktop" download for Ubuntu should be a ~700mb .iso file, and it is the live-CD.

Been running Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit (dual boot with Vista) on my Toshiba laptop.  Works great.  I am thinking about buying a cheap used laptop just for XP/Vista when I need it and converting the Toshiba to Ubuntu only.

So don't.

I can log in as root on my Ubuntu box just fine. Just give root a password, and voila! You can log in as root, if you'd like.

i'm calling bullshit on the faster, more reliable quote.

got a dual boot box (amd xp2800, 1gb ram, 80gb hdd, in shuttle sk43g), linux is cool and different but it still does stupid stuff and i've had to reboot it more than xp.

i really like linux and the UI is the shiznit but it's not perfect by any means. it's free and has the compviz cube-i'll give it that

If you don't know how to use an operating system, of course you're going to think you need to reboot it more.

It always takes a bit of getting used to when you switch to something different.

If you've driven an automatic all your life and then try a manual transmission, you're going to have a little trouble getting used to it, and you're going to mess it up a few times trying to things the old way, but that doesn't mean it is less reliable.

Only time I've ever rebooted Linux is because of a new Kernel update. Other than that, it is noticeably faster than my WinXP (which is dual boot on the same machine) setup.

here, play a movie off of an external usb drive and accidentally unmount the drive. now try to close the timbuktu process that brings the pc to a crawl and refuses to be killed, terminated, whatever.

i've noticed a few other little things as well like windows that keep 'wobbling' after you move them and they snap into place.

the torrent client that ubuntu downloads isn't that stable as well. 50+ torrents and an hour would kill it everytime.

xp and linux run at about the same pace on the box although i think xp is snappier than ubuntu on my quad core.

right now xp sp3 is so stable and solid that i believe linux can't really make that faster, more reliable argument using my current hardware/configuration.
