| It's illegal. It basically picked up where the (original) Napster left off. It and Morpheus were the big two for awhile, then Morpheus got loaded with spyware and ads. Now Limewire is the biggest P2P, followed by iMesh, BearShare, and eMule. And you have Bit Torrent too... |

Limewire uses the Gnutella network, which is much more decentralized then napster - there is no central server that lists all of the files. Napster files were served direct from other users, but the central server maintained a list of who had every file for easy searching. This made the system vulnerable to being shut down by lawsuits. The Gnutella network cannot be shut down so easily, since there is no central server or company behind it to sue. There are better Gnutella clients for most platforms, as far as I know. None of these programs are illegal, including Napster. At worst, any person or company serving copyrighted music files on these networks can be sued by the copyright holders. |

I think that has more to do with the person clicking on stuff than Limewire. These people also click on links to get Nigerian Money and "verify" their pay pal info once a month. You can download things that are bad with Limewire, for example, if you get something with 368 hits that matches your search letter for letter and is like 87kb then don't download it. That is not going to be the Battlestar Galactica episode, or that epic "asian changing room bukkake" As long as you download what you are looking for you will be ok with Limewire. |
| I have used Limwire for a few years and have never had a problem with it.... the only thing is that all of a sudden it says I am not connected to the internet and I haven't been able to download any songs for the past few days. But everything else is working fine...anyone have this happen, know a solution???? |
You too? I cannot figure out WHY it does this. I have had this problem twice on two different computers/windows installs. My computer runs like CRAP when I run limewire so I don't use it much. It is very useful though. Does anybody know how to fix this problem? |
From my experience, if it's a .mov file that is about 1MB or less in size, it's probably spam or a movie with a bunch of crap encoded that causes your browser to open up a ton of windows. Additionally, any file that is dramatically smaller than it should be is most likely spam or an incomplete file. If there's a extremely large number of hosts with the file (like over 100), that's another red flag. I've seen 12.5kb .MOV files being shared by 1000+ hosts before. Those are all OBVIOUS spam. |

I use Limewire, but noting the obvious scam flags have had no problems with viruses or trojan horses. Of course, I also run current anti-virus software, adware, etc. My daughter runs Limewire and clicks on anything that sounds like its what she's looking for (usually rap crap) and has problems with viruses, trojan horses, popups, etc all the time even though I have her laptop loaded with the same anti-virus software as I run on the desktop units. I'm pretty sure she just doesn't look for the flags. (She's 17 after all, so essentially she has no common sense.) And remember, downloading music and videos isn't illegal, allowing others to download from you is. |
Actually, neither is illegal. Has anybody ever been arrested, fined, or sent to jail for doing it? If the music or video is copyrighted, then distributing it in violation of the copyright is grounds for a lawsuit from the copyright holders, nothing more. |

That's the Russian outfit correct? I use Bearshare pro, I used the free version to download the pro version, then deleted the shareware version and whenusave and other packaged software. IIRC limewire(the free version) comes packaged with Zango, which eats resources, and I have found it to fuck things up, also I had to manually delete reg keys to get completely rid of it.... ETA: IIRC some people were burned with Napster and fined, But as MoonDancer said I believe they were fined for sharing not downloading. With Bearshare I just turn sharing off. I also keep the Downloads folder fairly clean, meaning I move the files to their respective appropriate folders/subfolders, which are not highlighted in the settings as library files that the program uses. So even if sharing was turned on, I would basically have no files to share..... |
