What are some of the liability insurance policies one can buy in case a felon breaks into a home and stoles our firearms (especially from a gun vault/lock box, etc.)?  Also, what is our liability if our gun is stolen from us and then used in a felony?  I'm a respondsable gun owner, and practice safe gun keeping (gun vault, etc.),but bad guys have all day to figure this out as well.  Thanks in advance.

A rider on a regular homeowner's (or renter's) policy for the extra value of the firearms.

Most policies limit the value of individual items to a few thousand dollars unless you declare the items and have a rider for them.

If the guns are stolen, report them stolen. If you don't report them and they're used in a crime, they will be traced back to you. Although it's unlikely that you would be charged with anything serious, you might have some uncomfortable conversations with the cops for a while.

This situation nearly happened to some of my distant in-laws. One brother has a Bushmaster AR, and his parents have an old Winchester pump shotgun and 30-30. Other brother, hooked on meth, cocaine, and lortab, steals all the guns and pawns them. A few months later, first brother goes into the storage room and discovers the theft.

He called me asked asked what he should do? For me, this is a no-brainer. Call the cops and file a report immediately. Mom and Dad didn't want to involve the cops, since other brother already has drug and legal problems.

I told first brother it didn't matter. If the guns were stolen, you must report them for the reasons given above. Other brother needs to be held accountable, and you need to show that you've made every effort to stay legal.

In the end, first brother, Mom and Dad filed the report. Other brother confessed, got a plea bargain. Going to jail for 60 days, probation for 3 years. If he keeps his nose clean (and coke-free) for 3 years, the charges are expunged.

Whut, huh?

I have never heard of a liability policy for stolen firearms.
I'm an FFL and have insurance to cover loss due to fire, theft, flood, tornado, etc., and have not yet been approached by an insurance company to cover guns no longer in my possession.

I know of no state where a homeowner would be liable for the misuse of his stolen property.
