I'm looking for something less than lethal for my wife to carry to work. She works in a hospital and cannot carry while at work and needs something for protection. Give me a few suggestions about what the best option would be for her to have.

Would pepper spray be allowed?

I'm thinking yes. She works in Neuro and is around lots of people everyday.

That would frowned upon and more than likely she would be fired if someone found out. So thats a negative on firearms.

That might be the best realistic option.

Many states and employers consider batons and tasers weapons.

Yeah I wouldn't do pepper spray in a hospital.  A stun gun or taser would be perfect for her, if she can't carry a gun.

X26
Fox 5.3
ASP Palm defender (OC) (potent little fuckers)
16", or 21" expandable baton
Maybe some basic self defense classes?

If spray can't be used, I don't think OP's wife has any real option as far as defensive tools.

Maybe self-defense training or martial arts classes?  I took martial arts training for several years, it was definitely worthwhile.  Training might be worthwhile for OP's wife.

I may look into this.

If she can make it to the car she is good to go but that is a long walk late at night.

Pepper spray used in the parking lot would be okay. Just make sure she doesn't use it inside the hospital.

There aren't too many hospitals that have metal detectors and few rent-a-cops or administrators have X-Ray vision.  Just saying.

Our new HR manager considers pepper spray a weapon.  Might want to verify its allowed.

Great ideas!

This is the real reason she needs something....Huntington Police arrested Travis Scott Burdette, 36, of Salt Rock, Thursday on two counts of sexual assault."

Of course, self defense with wither would open her up to the whole "use in a manner inconsistent with its labelling" thing-or is that just for drugs and inhalants(like paint thinner)?

Krav Maga

Flashlight w/strike bezel (attached to her keys) or a 5D+ sized Maglight

Does she carry any other bags besides her purse... maybe take up knitting and keep some loooong knitting needles in them?  Or have her carry a gymbag and she can lug around a 3lb dumbell.

I thought about suggesting a flashlight but striking weapons, due to their short "range" are more a liability than an aid if the carrier doesn't actually know how to fight with them. If she's willing to learn how to use it, a nice heavy flashlight is a great idea though.

OP, it needs to be everyday objects that nobody would expect to be a weapon.
She needs to practice using them as weapons, and then she needs to never mention to anybody that she plans to use them as weapons when the time comes.
If she needs to defend herself, it needs to look like a simple weapon of opportunity.

I love chopsticks to tie up women's hair.
1) Anodized titanium chopsticks come in a lot of really nice colors and they're very durable
2) It's an incredibly effective weapon that's located within easy reach of a seemingly-compliant body position, and you get one for each hand
3) Emergency eating
4) Chicks who wear chopsticks in their hair look fucking hot
