If you were going to configure an 870 for less-lethal use, how would you set it up?  Assume it is for private citizen use (as needed).

Furniture?
Preferred LL rounds?
Light?
Sling?

Educate me.

Probably just use some rock salt rounds and light and call it good. Why less lethal?

Interesting thought experiment/project gun.  And sometimes, things deserve to be shot, but not killed.

Just rack the slide, works every time.. That, and a new 870 probably won't work anyway, so it's less lethal from the factory.

I'd go with orange Magpul furniture or dye some furniture blue. It would never shoot regular ammo.

I hear the rock salt works well. There are lots of other options. I'm sure you can buy beanbag rounds somewhere.

The only reason I can see the need for a dedicated less lethal build is for riot control cops.

In which case I'd want something with a short barrel to reduce likelyhood of a rioter successfully grabbing the barrel. So 14 inches.

Then I'd want color marking to verify that it isn't a gun that gets loaded with lethal rounds. So have MagPul stock and forend painted light blue with orange markings.

Also a two-point sling to prevent it being grabbed out of my hand. And maybe a flashlight.

Just an 870 with rubber bullets. I'll use it to keep squirrels off the roof.

Non-lethally.

Ish.

ETA: If you find it necessary as an average citizen to use a less-lethal firearm against a 2-legged critter, you're likely doing something wrong.

Where are you going to get less lethal rounds for your less lethal shotgun

I think it's a bad idea as a regular citizen. Sounds lawsuity.

That being said, I'd go orange furniture from Magpul, as is tradition.

Either rubber buckshot, or rock salt.

Light = Surefire forend. Don't think they make them in orange, but honestly never checked.

lol...beat.

I was going to say I'd sell him my 870 Express. It's a jam-o-matic and often very difficult to even load fully. Less lethal by design. Bravo Remington!!!

lets see

I would take a remington 870 and load it with rubber bullets

pretty much done at that point

how did humanity survive back before everyone had such elite "kit"?

its a mystery

I'd remove the stock furniture and paint it orange.

Put a decent sling on it, two-point. And an Aimpoint T1.

14" barrel.

Whatever rounds I thought would work best from DT, ALS, or CTS. (I can get those rounds.) Likely beanbag rounds.

.

At least they used to.  I was issued a bear aversion gun back in 2007 that had an orange reduced LOP Speedfeed stock and a blaze orange SF forend with the light and switches.

I can't say whether or not you'll need agency letterhead or not, but LL beanbags work great on problem bears.  The UOF "continuum" that I used was beanbag, rubber buck, rubber slug, repeat once more then Boom Youre Dead.

Also, open choke needed for most LL beanbags IIRC,

I have a bunch of rubber fin rounds.

If it was a dedicated LL then I'd just paint the furniture orange.
