Google Chrome, on both Windows 7 and 8 machines, and only on arfcom - Embedded YouTube videos don't show up, about 50% of the time. There's a big gap in the post, where an embedded video should be.

And I'm too lazy to figure out why, because it works fine in other browsers, I'm not religiously married to any particular browser (I actually get laid regularly, so...), and did I mention I'm lazy and not getting paid to fix an annoying problem on my own computer?

Any similar stories?

I figure there's a plumber somewhere with leaks, or an electrician with really substandard wiring. I used to live across the street from a landscaper who did absolutely STUNNING work for his customers (magazine worthy), but had the worst yard on the block.

Never had the problem becaues I refuse to use Chrome, I read Arfcom on an Ipad. Check your plugins and see if any are deactivated.

Lazy IT guy tip for this one - blanket the house in Cisco Aironet AP's. Worked for me.

I actually wired my last house up - two drops to every jack, at least two jacks in every room. Everything came together on a Chatsworth telecom rack in my basement, including Panduit patch panels and wire management.

In this place? Mostly wireless. Fuck it.

My network drops out for 5-10 seconds or so once a day or so.

I'm entirely too lazy to troubleshoot it.  I troubleshoot enough during the day.

Panduit is overrated. Leviton or Ortronics- it'll work the same and cost less.
Half of our business is structured cabling and I'm 100% wireless in my home. The Cat-6 is there, just not used.

This is probably more a matter of cheap than lazy, but you left your VPN logged in at my house once and I backed up all my shit to your work computer.  I figure it's more redundant than my external drive.

Google Chrome works for me on Windows 8 with no issues here on embedded youtube videos. Do any proxying or scanning (antivirus, malware, etc.) of traffic at home? Video drivers up to date? Google Chrome will use hardware acceleration of certain things when available, unless you turn off that option. I assist with proxy issues at my firm as we use squid and do not allow DNS lookups to the internet from internally. Dealing with browser inconsistencies is fun. Like stabbing yourself.

It is at my house. You are more than welcome to come for a nerd party, but it's really being put together for mundane reasons. I have ~240 hours of VHS home movies (the oldest one being about 30 years old) to digitize, and that's before I get to the 8mm film, or even my own Blu-ray rips of...stuff.

It's something I'm doing for my family (immediate, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc), because I know how, I'm a nice guy, and I figure they'll really appreciate it. They'll be able to watch and share everything, over the Internet.

CAL (CAL-main, CAL-profession [which came in at a later date], CAL-invite being the highest levels) was the big one back when I played.  Don't think it's around any longer.

Used to go:
CAL-open -- anyone can join
CAL-intermediate -- do well enough in your open season, get bumped to CAL-im
CAL-main -- do well enough in your season as a CAL-im team, get bumped to CAL-m
CAL-professional  -- do well enough in your season as a CAL-m team, get bumped to CAL-p
CAL-invite -- gotta be good, and get invited to this league level.

Man...I kinda miss that.

It would have thrilled me to no end, if you copied your shit to my NAS at work.

Remember, you're talking to the guy who has a wide open (guest) wireless network with HONEYPOT as the SSID.

Somebody around here is going to bite on that one day, and I'm not going to feel even a little bit guilty about it.

I was doing some software testing on an XP VM the other day.  Dude, that is one dated-looking OS now.  I couldn't believe it, actually.

It was a great OS, though, that's for sure.
