I own a '91 Land Cruiser that's been utterly reliable for as long as I've owned it, but I've been considering replacing it and buying something with more power.

Today's Hilux thread got me thinking about engine replacement as an alternative to buying a new vehicle.  Can anyone guesstimate the expenses associated with dropping in a big diesel engine?  Are there any shops in the NOVA area that specialize in this sort of thing? Where should I go to learn more?

A diesel swap (that you pay someone else to do) would probably run at least 5 grand.

Have you thought about getting a supercharger? It would be much easier to add on. Your gas mileage afterwards will be even worse unfortunately.

Here's a 4BT swap that looks fantastic. My neighbor is considering a 4BT swap in his '89-ish Range Rover.
