I read a book about a WW1 german colonel in east Africa named Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck.  let me just say that he was quite skilled at his job, which in this case was sucking resources out of his enemy.  His examples of thinking ahead and fighting based on your strengths should be remembered for anyone involved in a conflict.  The force he commanded was partly Germans, but mostly natives.  His guerilla-in-force tactics were amazingly effective.

It's a long read, but a great history lesson.
