Maybe both, I want to see if there is one on a computer that I have and I may put one on someone's computer, just for shits and grins.

A program like KeyScrambler will defeat a software keylogger, though the free version only works for the internet. The premium version works in pretty much all of Windows. All it does is encrypt your keystrokes so that the keylogger reads the ciphertext instead of what you're trying to write. It does not remove the keylogger and does not prevent it from taking screenshots,  if the keylogger has that capability.

I've tried this with several keyloggers and it works great, but there are limitations.

Only time I've used one was to help my friend get passwords for his daughters myspace and email back in the day.  I just used a cheap freebie off of a torrent site.  Need to be careful depending on what kind of information he's trying to obtain.  And should also be careful if he's asking you about information you have no idea about, perhaps he shouldn't seek advice from someone who knows as much as he does, nothing, about something.

They are not that hard to use, not that hard to install and configure, not hard to find "extended trial" versions for free, and not that hard to hide from the end user.....if you have an ounce of computer know how.

Google is your friend.

Illegal in many instances  unless you have the consent of the logged.

Folks have been charged for spying on their SO.

If you work for a large company, they likely use them, and you likely gave them permission on one of the 50 forms you signed while applying.

I used one for when the kids were getting to the right age and I detected behavior that needed closer inspection.  I am glad I did it and I would do it again.  I was able to head off some bad things and that was that.

I would NEVER use it on a SO.  If I had doubts about what the SO was doing I would ask them what was going on.  If the lying started I would eject.  Simple.

You install it on a target computer.... usually by law a computer that you personally own.  Then it collects keystrokes on that computer.  Many of them (especially the free ones.... but not only the free ones) package that data up and:

>  Make it available for you to access with a password

>  Ship it off via the Internet to the author of the keylogger who actually wrote it as malware - so some dumbass could willingly load it on their computer(s).  So hopefully credit cards numbers, financial info, etc etc etc etc help the author maintain their quality of living.

I've always been impressed what people will willingly load on their computer understanding absolutely nothing about that specific piece of software and thinking that it could never pose a risk.
