What really happened to cause NG personnel to open fire on the rioters? It was way ahead of my time. |
| The whole story everyone has been hearing for 40+ years is a LIE. The hippies were smashing store windows and lighting fires downtown all morning. They started a fire at the college building. Bottles and rocks were thrown at the National Guard troops. Some hippie had a gun and fired multiple shots. New FBI records recently released (but ignored by the media) reveal all of this. The whole story has been a 100% myth, perpetrated by the left wing. |

These kinds of threads are always hilarious on arfcom, and usually reveal some fascinating convoluted logic and rationalizations. I can completely rationalize shooting someone who is about to bash someone in the head with a large rock. IF that is what happened. I wasnt there. |

http://dept.kent.edu/sociology/lewis/lewihen.htm I have never heard the claim that the Guardsmen were fired on before. Article on FBI information about possible sniper firing on Guardsmen |

My uncle was a dirty hippy, and he was there. He swears up and down that an order was given to fire. I never really believed him. My friends dad was NG and was there. He said it was total chaos and there was no order given. He never fired - said he heard a bunch of shooting, and looked for something to shoot but couldn't find a threatening target. |

Hippies rioted threw rocks at armed national guardsmen, many of whom where young kids themselves, hippies backed guardsmen to a place where they were either surrounded or back into a place they could not get out of. Armed national guardsmen fired at hippies because of poor marksmanship skills only killed 4.
Some of the rumors circulating about Kent State a left wing prof was on the roof of one of the campus buildings with a .38 taking pot shots at the guardsmen, a recording taken at the time has what some people believe were shots being fired and would confirm that the guardsmen excuse that they thought they were being fired upon and returned fire. for the prior week leading up to the fatal riot a left wing marxist prof was planning escalating the confrontation so that someone would get shot to further the cause. I have no sympathy for people who believe their first amendment right to free speech includes spitting at returning military men at airports. You can espouse all your views you want but I draw the line at abuse of military and for me that negates any argument you have for being against something. |

Quoted: http://dept.kent.edu/sociology/lewis/lewihen.htm I have never heard the claim that the Guardsmen were fired on before. Article on FBI information about possible sniper firing on Guardsmen important info: "Then there was the testimony of an ROTC cadet whose identity remains unknown, one of the pervasive redactions concealing the names of all the FBI agents who conducted the interviews and of all those whom they interrogated. Although presumably angry over the demonstrators’ destruction of the campus ROTC building, the cadet’s calm, precise firsthand account nonetheless carries a credibility not easily dismissed. Before the fatal volley, the ROTC cadet told the FBI, he "heard one round, a pause, two rounds, and then the M-1s opened up.” The report continued that the cadet "stated that the first three rounds were definitely not M-1s. He said they could possibly have been a .45 caliber. … [He] further stated that he heard confirmed reports of sniper fire coming in over both the National Guard radio and the state police radio.” The cadet also told the FBI he observed demonstrators carrying baseball bats, golf clubs and improvised weapons, including pieces of steel wire cut into footlong sections, along with radios and other electronic devices "used to monitor the police and Guard wavelengths.”" |

No idea where I read it, but I recall reading that an audio recording of the event exists and the first shot fired was not from a rifle....
No idea if that is truth, tinfoil or aliens. Either way, the OWS hippes want a repeat and I pray that they do NOT get what they want. |

I blame the hippies for her death, don't shoot and throw rocks at armed guardsmen. Her death should be put on the shoulders of the protesters the guardsmen were trying to protect themselves not kill people for sake of gunning down a few hippies.
Just like a thief that gets shot because he was committing a crime, the hippies instigated it, escalated it, attacked the guardsmen and the consequences of their idiocy was the death of innocent people. The decision to not assemble peacefully to protest and their decision to ratchet up the anger lead to the death of innocent people. |

Again, the same thing be said about the Boston massacre, agree? Quoted: I blame the colonials for their deaths, don't shoot and throw rocks at armed redcoats. | My father got back to campus that day (he was away in the reserves) and experienced the chaos first hand. He said there were plenty of non-student protestors helping to stir things up. Not just students. Just like what's going on with the various OWS protests. The agitators get shit stirred up and the peasants (college kids in this instance...i.e. useful idiots) get a bullet in their ass. |

Two of days after the shooting my friend's father who was a Professor at OSU drove us up to Kent State for what I assume was to one of life's learning lessons.
The campus was relatively quiet. Trash, police barriers everywhere and a general sense of tragedy prevailed. I don't remember seeing that many people milling around. The area where the shooting occurred were off limits if I remember correctly. The whole thing could have been avoided looking back these days, but remember the establishment was getting pretty tired of the anti- war bullshit. The protesters were a bunch of assholes exercising their First Amendment rights but going about it the wrong way, just like these Occutards. Nomex on. |

This and anyone who suggests shooting unarmed protesters is a good idea ought to move to one of those middle eastern countries that does it. This is America where we have the right to peaceably assemble. Except they weren't unarmed (the innocents accidentally killed were bystanders not participants) and they sure as hell were not peaceable. Big difference. |

The sentiment maybe. One of our greatest founders defended them. This event had less to do with the cause than did the British response to it despite the appropriate judging of the soldiers. |

Yeah I didn't have my facts straight, so I finished reading the article and edited my post. Still seems like a good idea to shoot people throwing rocks at you. |
