I put in for one of the elusive openings on our department's K9 team.  I welcome any tips/advice for preparing for the interview.

Spent a few years working K9 in a decnt sized PD (400+).  It is a fun gig, but be prepared to train alot.  You have to constantly train with your partner to keep him up to par and it does get old after awhile.

I don't know how your agency does try outs, but my old PD took volunteers and picked according to experience, stats and an overall good reputation.  A big part of the tryouts was catching a dog.  I had to catch 3 or 4 different dogs in a row during my tryout and they looked to see if you are afraid of working with dogs and wearing the bite suit and taking a hit.  Several guys did'nt make it beacuse they were afraid of taking the bite.

Like I said, alot of work involved, but I have to say my Dutch Shepard was my best partner ever, always ready to go to work and back me up.

BTW if you work K9 long enough you will have some teeth scars to show for it eventually.  I have 2 on my arms and 2 on my legs form various dogs.

Know resposne criteria, usage criteria, and training regiments. This should be in policy. They should also have some training manual.

You better know your case law...... that should come up.

Know the ins and outs of how your unit is run and what is expected from a handler.

Also, as already stated, know your case law.

Register here K9 Fleck and read up. You will need to get access to this site, hopefully you will have enough time before your interview.
