Story:

My kids play with their bicycles, pogo sticks, etc. Sometimes they run around with their bikes (along with their friends) in between houses to get from one house to another. In one of these instances, one kid belonging to a neighbor tried to "jump" with the bike from the grass into the cement/driveway. I was watching them as they went from my house to the neighbors house. The kid face-planted and hits the other neighbors car with the bike. One small dent, three small scratches (dime size) lower portion of rear door. I was going to let the kids parents know, but by the time I dusted the kid off, watched it hop in one leg for a few minutes...I forgot all about the ding to the car. For what is worth, the area that the kids use to travel to/from, while part of the "dwelling"/property, is considered common access area (owned by the association and not the home-owner)

Fast-forward a week...the neighbor approaches me and tells me "I saw your kid hit my car with their bike". At first it did not click, I acknowledged that yes they "cut across" houses to get to the neighbors house so I would not mind taking a look at the damage. Once I saw the damage it all came back!!! I told him to get a quote and "we will go from there"

I fuc*ed up, by HONESTLY FORGETTING to tell the kid's parents. So got the copy of the estimate (several, and I am paying for the lowest one...not cheap I might add) and the neighbor will be here to get the check in an hour or so. I had a talk with the offending kid parents about the ACCIDENT and they offered a payment plan since they "don't have two nickels to rub together". I told them it's OK, not to worry and to let their kids know not to play close to the cars (something I tell mine and all the other kids ALL THE TIME)

For one he did not see SH*T! If he had seen it, he would have bolted out of the house so fast, smoke would be coming out of his shoes (and we will leave it at that). The part that REALLY pisses me off, he has the balls to accuse MY KIDS of doing something that they did not do! That is the part I am LIVID about.

IF I had not seen the neighbors kid, or my kid hit the car he would not be getting SH*T. Since I did not inform the other kids parents, I can't pull a fast one a week later and "point fingers". So once he is here to get the check, I will have a little talk with this man. Hopefully I will not have to blade at 45...

Short version: For those that can't read/comprehend long sentences...learn!

Perhaps I've suffered a dull moment, but I fail to see how any of this is your responsiblity.

"That wasn't my kid"

I wouldn't pay him directly. Have him give you the bill once the work is done.

I've seen way too many people not get repairs done after someone pays in advance.

I wouldn't pay just because neighbor guy is an obvious liar and is looking for a quick buck.

Why in the Hell would you pay for damages your child did not cause?

Cause stupid me I asked my 5 year old if she had hit the neighbors car and she said yes. It wasn't until I saw the dings that it all came back to me....

LOL! Truth/honesty is what I try to convey to my kids...sometimes I get carried away and forget they are kids after all.

ETA: He still hasn't shown up...

DONE! Gave him a piece of my mind, after all that I asked him to spell his first/last name to go in the check. He started stuttering like a mofo...that was worth the price of admission. Thanked me, told me to have a good night (no stuttering), told him to do the same.
