| I applied for my local police department over the summer, passed the written and physical agility tests and made it to the initial interview. I was placed on an elibibility roster and today I recieved a call. The department is willing to put me through the academy (I'm not POST certified yet) which starts on Jan. 7th. The only problem is I still have one last semester of school needed to finish my degree (12 credit hours shy). But I feel that getting my academy training paid for, plus being on the city payroll while I'm there is too good of an oppertunity to pass up. The college I attend has an excellent online and night campus and it should not be a big deal to finish my last 12 hours after I complete the academy. Anyway, I have a decision to make on this matter...accept the offer and put off my last semester and degree for a bit, or decline the offer and finish my degree. What say you arfcom LEO's? |
If you have an offer, and you can finish your degree after the academy, I say it's a no-brainer. Take the offer. But make damn sure you follow through and finish the degree. |

Thanks for the input guys...I think I've made up my mind...I just need to get a couple questions answered by my college before I make the full commitment, but it looks like I will soon be joining the ranks of the Arfcom LEO's! Anybody else have any input? Much appreciated! |
Depending on what your degree is/will be in, some of the classes from the Academy may be able to be put toward it. You may be able to finagle a gew extra credits that way. |

| Well i offically accepted the offer today...started the paperwork for the background check...looks like I'll be doing a CVSA and a pee test next week at the minimum...probably I private interview with the chief as well....Anybody got any advice to help relax for the CVSA? Never had any type of lie detector type test done before. |
One of the best pieces of advice I've heard for someone starting out in a law enforcement career was pretty simple and straightforward: "Don't get killed, and don't get arrested". Good luck. |
I have had 7 polys in my lifetime, the first is the worst, after that they get easier. Best advice is do not let the examiner get under your skin! They will accuse you of being ___________________ even though you know it is total BS. Be truthful with the background packet, that is how the examiner basis his/her questions. And do not with hold anything, trust me, unless you get a green examiner, they pretty much have heard it all. The night before you take your test get a good nights sleep, try not to drink any caffeine, my big problem, get there early and relax, relax, relax!! I have had two complete and total a@#hole examiners and both were at least 15 years younger then me. But, I just grinned and dealt with it. Good luck to you, keep us posted. |
Just take a Valium an hour before the test. You will be fine... JK |
Carry a big tube of KY jelly too. It's appreciated by the interviewer. |
