I’m NOT LE; just posting about something from where I live. I went to high school just a few blocks from there. It was a war zone back then and still is today. I remember seeing the sidewalk get hosed off by one of the faculty after someone was shot in the early hours of the morning. Here’s the perp, now deceased after another officer was forced to take him down. He was randomly firing an AR-style firearm just off downtown. What’s sick is the social media response. A significant number of people cheering, saying it’s amount time the cops get some of their own medicine, etc.  Article here. I hope the officer pulls through. Please be sure to wear your vests and consider plates. |

I wear a kevlar outer vest. I could probably buy plates to pop in it but I'm not entirely sure its worth the extra weight on my hips/back/knees. I'll be doing 20 years on the road before riding a desk. 20 years in and out of vehicles, twisting to type on a laptop, etc. 12 hour shifts 14-15 days a month. From what I've seen with older guys who spend a long career in uniformed LE hip/knee surgery is fairly common once you hit mid 50s. With everything there is a pro and a con. If I go up against a guy with a rifle and don't have time to switch to a plate carrier I have to rely on speed, accuracy and cover. I take the gamble because I believe minimizing gear/weight will be better for my health in the long run. If I know I'm about to go confront someone with a rifle I typically park/stage up and switch to a plate carrier. But sometimes on the fly you gotta run with what you've got.  It is bizarre to me that some guys don't even wear kevlar. We deal with people armed with pistols all the time. |

I’m currently just a dumb Bailiff for a District Court that doesn’t even hear felonies and half of us wear our external vests and the others don’t wear armor at all. I currently have issued rifle plates in my armor. My thought process there is that we have 2 elementary schools and a high school within a quarter mile of our building. Plus the extra weight is a workout in and of itself and some of the shooting competitions I go to get time deductions for wearing plates. |

The local media went oddly silent on this incident, which is really weird because normally they absolutely bathe in blood whenever an AR15 or scary looking firearm is involved. Then this came up. |

| Well...is there anyone who does not wear at least soft armor anymore? When I started in the late 80's some old timers did not wear kevlar but it was the norm when I retired. Guys were starting to buy their own plates when I retired. Still have the old 3a vest and level 4 hard plates. |
