| Would you work for $40-45k a year if you had to be away from home 6 days per week on average? Serious question. |
|
How far away from home? Is this a daily commute or overnight stays during the week? Is moving an option.
IMO, probably not worth it. I would rather work close to home for $25k-$30k if that was an option. For 40-45k, I would probably be willing to make a 1 hour commute max. |
| IMO it depends on your personal situation. Do you have a wife/kids at home? What are the job benefits? Will the benefits of the money outweigh the possible risk to your marriage? And how far away is it? $40-45k isn't very much money and woudln't be enough incentive for me to leave home (unless I was single and had no other obligations). |

Not unless I had to. I have a friend that stays at a hotel 5 days a week for work. Fuck that. Same here. If I had to I'd do whatever it takes, but my brother had a job like that and it didn't sound like anything that would be my first choice - and that's considering I am single and don't have a family like he does. |

Nobody wants to do the job. the company I work for has a hard time finding drivers and the most anybody is out is overnite. Driving is more of a lifestyle than a job. FWIW, when I started OTR I made less than that.

Why is the transportation (trucking) industry needing drivers and the 99ers are bitching about no jobs? It would be a good job for a guy in his 20's with no family and no real attachments... I made more than twice that traveling and consulting and it was rough to be away from home that much. If you have a family how long would you have to do this before you could start getting day loads etc.? Would there be any chance for that type of work, once you have proven yourself and move up in seniority? It might be worth it if it were only for a year or two and gave you an in into a better job or position after a while. ETA: How about working in the oil patch or the Dakota's they are looking for people and pay better than this. You could also move your family with you or at the very least if you are going to be gone they will have better resources. Just post a thread with that in the title someone from the industry will chime in and get you going. |
| You are right about the oil fields. The point I am trying to make is that their are jobs available that pay your bills. You just need to be willing to work. Why are there protesters around tha country complaining about a lack of work? It is there, just go do the work. |

Thinking about joining the military?
The pay doesn't start nearly that high and you're gone 7 days a week for months on end. A mans gotta' do what a mans gotta' do. If the job leads to a career that you'll see a future in then yes, take it. Sure beats not working at all and something better might come up. |

When I was younger and for 10 years after I married I worked 100+ hour weeks. Now at 40, I live on a small farm that we purchased with cash.
Was it worth it? That depends. My body is worn out, but on the other hand, I am now home far more to be with my family and children. We have no debt. Would I do it again? I don't think I would. I do know that I was lucky many times. Many trips home I can not remember getting there. I never drank, smoked, or used any drugs/medication, being on call 24/7 prevents that, it was just exhaustion, super high stress levels, lack of sleep, etc... I was not a good father when I was home anyways. The children wanted to play and I needed sleep. My wife wanted to talk, and I would fall asleep. I would fall asleep anywhere at anytime. Going to church with the family was pointless, I could not stay awake anyways. I can not remember how many times rumble strips woke me up when I was drifting to sleep. Life then really sucked. The money was great, and I was blessed with a wife that saved as much as possible for the farm, but I sacrificed a lot of family life that I can not ever get back. So, would I travel for 45K a year. Yes, if I needed to. No, if I didn't. |
