My kid is starting to learn Java.  The stuff he's read (for Minecraft mods) is to use Eclipse Editor.

I've used NetBeans.

To actually LEARN the language, which would one suggest for him starting out?  He can make a dialog box with Eclipse, and gets a bit confused any further than that.

I know nothing about the pros and cons of each, but I would lean favorably toward Eclipse because its name was a poke right in Sun's eye.

InteliJ is actually better than either for Java, but I don't think it's free anymore.

I always used NetBeans because it was prepackaged and required the least effort.

Eclipse is great if you want your kid to be frustrated with constantly corrupted projects and niggly configuration issues.

Netbeans is focused on Java. Eclipse is more multi-language and is generally a pain in the ass as a result. Awful UI.

Netbeans.  Much easier to use just for Java.

It is if you know where to look.

I use Idea 10 at work, actually.  It's pretty nice.

IntelliJ is awesome, Eclipse is a horror, never used NetBeans.
