I just moved from an area with Verizon FiOS to an area with Comcast Xfinity.  I'm having an issue with my wifi.  First a little background...





1. When we had FiOS, I had my Verizon combo modem/router inside a TV stand behind a door


2. We had the 25mbps service and based on the Speakeasy test we would get anywhere from 20-30mbps in the entire apartment, even outside


3. My work laptop, which was several rooms away, also had these same speeds







Now with Comcast we have the 75mbps package, and using our phones generally see anywhere from 40-80mbps on Speakeasy.  The one HUGE exception is my work laptop, it has been rendered almost useless on the new service.  I can barely even get the Speakeasy website to load, let alone run a test.  As of now the combo modem/router is sitting on the floor about 15' away from my laptop with a clear line of sight.  I did nothing different to the laptop except connect to the new network.  I called Comcast and they "reset the wireless connection on their end" and it worked for a few minutes then it went right back to the way it was.







Thoughts???


 



Update: I picked up an Asus RT-N66R.  Pulling down over 90mbps now

Assume the wifi base station is new too?

If your phones are not seeing a problem on the wifi.... this would mean your laptop is the issue, not the wifi service.   Troubleshoot your laptop

Are you crazy, it is obviously the laptop, it worked perfectly before.
OP, have you tried deleting the connection and reconnecting to the network? Sounds like an annoying problem, but a Comcast tech is most likely going to connect an iPhone to it, run a speedtest, and thank you for calling, please give me a five on the survey, and don't be surprised when you get a $60 charge for me to tell you something is wonky between the router and your laptop.



The Comcast gateways are average performers, not terrible, but not particularly good either, have you tried a different router? I have a Comcast all in one gateway, I have the wifi disabled and an Asus AC66 router in AP mode, that combination works great for me.

I've had a lot of problems with mine, too.

Got a new wireless modem when my router shit the bed. After all my Rokus stopped working, I had them bring a replacement - only to have them stop working again the next day. So, disgusted, I bought an AppleTV module - which works, but that's only taking care of ONE TV out of FOUR!

Yeah. I'm pissed - and the network goes offline all the time, too.

I wish I had another choice here, but I don't.

As far as I can tell its just restricted to needing the admin user password (which we're given anyway ) to make certain changes or install programs.  It works flawlessly on other wifi connections.

Yep, I'm crazy.   One device works with no issues and another doesn't, it must be the wifi.   Maybe even the head end router right?

Actually 1 Galaxy S6, 2 iPhones and 2 iPads work with no issues

Put the modem in bridge mode and connect your own router/WIFI. My Comcast modem/wifi equipment was not very reliable, and blocked some VPNs, depending on type.

Is it a Dell 1702.. wireless card? I had a similar problem with my Comcast router.

You also could try:

updating the drivers of the laptop wifi card (Device Manager > Network Adapters)

Delete and re-install the the wifi card.

Buy this and plug it in to a USB port.

I tried deleting the connection then reconnecting, no effect.  Maybe if I feel like beating my head off the wall I'll try calling Comcast again later.  How much does a decent router cost?

Dell Latitude E5540.  Lots of RAM, SSD, aside from the SSD shitting the bed a couple months ago it's been a great machine.




I've been trying to run a Comcast speed test, it's been stuck at 50% and .45mbps for the last 15min or so

Dump the supplied xfinity equipment and buy your own modem. Then go buy your own router.  You'll save a bundle on lease fees plus you won't be sponsoring your neighborhood hotspot.  If you have xfinity equipment, you have a public hotspot for other xfinity users to use.

I have been battling this at a office location. I had to open up the box they gave us and disconnect the antennas. You cant use your own modem on business class service.
