I'm 27 and am missing discs in my lower 4 vertebrae. I got on one once and I about passed out from the pain.

Now my friend who has been shot in the back, has fused vertebrae and no discs in his whole lower back loves his and it helps him a lot. I think it's user  sensitive

Gotta go with this. Obviously, different types of problems or injuries will require different treatments. I would suspect that some severe problems could be made worse by inversion. (?)
I THINK using one occasionally would probably help my relatively minor lower back troubles, but I haven't had a chance to try one yet.

Tag.  I'm probably going to get a Teeter Hang EP-950 or better.

FYI:  I just went through 13 weeks of spinal decompression therapy for degenerative discs in C5-C6 & C6-C7.  The first session hurt so bad I nearly tapped out.  The next five hurt also, but got progressively less.  By week 8, session 24, there was no pain.

A straight hang is different than what I did, but if you move things in relation to a nerve that is already under stress, it'll probably hurt.
