Is your internet persona close to your real world persona? Personally, I dont act differently on the net. I tell bad jokes in real life, give bad advice, Im only right about half the time, I kill most of the conversations I jump into, and Im generally ignored.. Still, I cant help but wonder if some of you guys really call people out in the real world like you do online? If you do act differently, why?

Im all of it and much more.

eta: seriously though, I don't downplay myself, or make myself some god on the net. I just don't really see the point. Besides, what happens when someone from the site meets you and realizes that you are some fake dumbass sumbitch?

No...I am actually a very quiet person....

I hold back online.

I understand that most people here are honest, God fearing folks several years my senior.

I'll just be the college fellah that photoshops stuff once in a while...

I appreciate a good OWNED pic every now and then

I actually have a much larger penis in real life than on the internet.

I'm actually a little nicer in person.

it's impssible to convey inflection and facial expressions on the keyboard and as a result, things get taken too seriously at times.

Maybe I should use the smileys more

I dunno, ask someone who met me.

Yes, both personas are close. I try to call it the way I see it, but I aways try to be tactful and polite. E-communications can be easily misread because there aren't the usual external qualifiers to guide the recipient of the communication; that is, no tone of voice, facial expressions, etc. I have to agree that I find it distressing the extent to which some people take advantage of anonimity to be rude and gratuitously strident in their debate with other people whom they hardly know.

Hmmmmm...... I'm a little nicer in real life I suppose..

And for all of you who just muttered thank god under your breath.......bite me.

Pretty much. Only, I'm much much taller on the Internet!

I'm nicer in real life.

But I'm TRYING to live up to my internet persona.

I'm actually twice the badass in real life that I am on the internet. I'm also bigger in real life, meaner in real life, and can kick you ass more in real life then I can on the internet.

Oh yeah, I look better in real life too.

Pretty close, I think. I am probably less cautious about people's feelings on here, because I think almost everybody here understands the difference between attacking a factual claim, argument, or use of language and attacking someone personally. People tend to react less predictably in RL; you say "That's a stupid idea," and the listener hears "You're stupid." On the whole, this is - believe it or not - an intellectual environment, despite some of the subject matter. That's why it's great place to discuss anything at all. It's also egalitarian, since there's no extra credit for being fast on your feet. If you hand me my ass on a point of dispute, it doesn't matter whether it took you 3 minutes or 2 days to noodle out the response.

Crap, this turned into a "Geeze, I love you guys" post.

The answer is "Yes, pretty much."

I'm the semi-quiet lurker who's brain is always going 100mph, and who will out of nowhere just crack some sarcastic joke or some kind of comedic commentary. I also generally try to stay out of debates.

Pretty much the same way I am here.

EDIT: If I come off as arrogant, rude, or overserious, believe me it's just the interface between the keyboard and monitor. I'm laughing and smiling most of the time.

I regret I am often perceived differently here than in RL.

Nope...you pretty much are the same Beekeeper.

And I mean that in a nice way.

I am the same in real life or on the net. I don't pretend to be something I am not; no point in that. I don't like posters who try to use the anonymity of the net to be rude or otherwise uncivil.

I am the same, execpt I don't have the ability to throw out Ackbar at a moments notice in real life.

Due to my job, I can only express my EXTREME views online. My wife thinks I'm a pyschotic sometimes. I down play myself in real life to avoid becoming the neihborhood crackpot.

I'm fatter on the Internet than in real life.....

I'm much wittier and more eloquent here then I am in person. There's no verbal equivalent to the backspace key.

There's also no verbal equivalent to Photoshop....

THe proto-typical New Yawker here, loud and often abrasive. I gather I am that way on the internet as I know I am that way in real life. I have little patience with people who ought to be doing better, and unfortunately, I let them know.
