This is a WRT54G

When I go to the router configuration address 192.168.1.1  I get a blank page in firefox and when I try in IE 8.0 it says IE cannot display the webpage.

I checked cmd/ipconfig /all   and my default gateway is 192.168.1.1 but I can't get the password prompt to show up. I'd rather not reset the router because I have a bunch of forwarded ports that I don't want to have to reconfigure.

so what gives?

Default on that router is 192.168.1.245 I think.

Actually, most WRT54G should default to 192.168.1.1, HOWEVER Linksys has also been known to use 192.168.1.245 and 192.168.1.254.

I hesitate to say this, but have you tried simply power cycling the router?  This shouldn't affect your current config, but will force it to restart, clearing any 'weirdness' in memory.

If that fails, you might be left with the hard reset.

Good Luck!

And here I was hoping for something really interesting :(
I had a cisco that would only accept commands if you didn't autocomplete anything.  Somehow it's autocomplete database had gotten corrupt, weirdest bug ever.

* Are you directly hard wired into the router?  If not, then get a CAT5 cable and plug it into your PC and directly to one of the ports on the back of the router.  This should provide access via your web browser to the logon screen to your router.
* Default PW on a Linksys router should be "admin" unless you changed it.
* If you are having connectivity issues, then there is no need to enter into the router's settings.  Just simply power cycle your router and your internet connectivity should come back up. (Power Cycle - unplug the DC adapter on the back of the router for 20 secs and then reconnect it.)

if you're feeling frisky you can use nmap or a x386 equivilent to scan your subnet and see if the inside interface has an unexpected IP address.  once you know you're pointed at the right IP address, then you can troubleshoot any display issues.

Linksys routers can act weird sometimes. I had an older model that would reset to the default config sometimes anytime we had a nasty lightening storm or brown out.

Make sure pop ups are not blocked, you dont have java script turned off. I would check that first?

I config a lot of the WAP54G routers.. Similar model but no switch ports.  They're usually .245's.  Still, if he changed it himself it could be anything.  I've seen a few brick themselves, some will ping back and some won't.  When they go, they go silly.

Google the "30-30-30 Reset", be prepared to re-enter your config afterward.  After you do that, export the config and save it as backup.

+1

My 54G is at 192.168.1.1 until I changed it.

I had a router/wireless card issue a few weeks ago.  Wound up replacing the wireless card and the router.

Yea well.. Cycle the power, close the trouble ticket out, call it "Intermittent connectivity glitch", and if it keeps happening, reflash.  If it keeps happening still, replace.

The DD-WRT firmware will add functionality to your router, but there's some risk of the router flipping out and becoming useless.  If one doesn't need the extras it's not worth the risk.  The router will eventually flip out and become useless anyway though.  They all do.  Even the expensive ones burn up now and then, but you get less bullshit when you call in for an RMA

I'm running Firmware
Version: v4.71.1, Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c on mine. It's been in use for quite a few years now, but it'll die eventually...

Perchance, did you set it up for a secure connection ala:

https://192.168.1.1

VS

http://192.168.1.1 ?

This will cause a problem like the one you had reported (I know from experience I did it on a DDWRT router one time...)

Ted...

I had this problem with a link sys router and a DSL modem. What happened is the DSL modem reset and the setting for "Bridged mode" and "External PPPoE" were set back to default, the router and dsl modem had conflicting IP addresses. Disconnect your modem from the router, cycle the power on the router, try connecting to http://192.168.1.1
