If I turn off the fan and the light is ALL of it really off?

Um, no. I know turn the breaker off. Just figured if it really is all good then I dont have to disturb the kids and the things their doing. They can hold off for a few for my safety

It depends on how the switch leg is wired.  Either way, the safest thing would be to turn off the breaker for that circuit.

If you shut the switch off on the wall, then there is no power going to it.  Shut the breaker to be safe, but I usually just shut off the switch if I am not able to get to the box.

I am not an electrician by any means, but I have never been zapped either.

Glad you're still around to post your results.  
FWIW, though ... quite often there are other conductors in a ceiling box that could remain "hot" if they are on a different circuit (or breaker) than what you turned off.
Just be sure you are not involved in any way with a different circuit or are opening up a "shared" neutral wire.
