I love cicada killers.  Growing up, we always had them in our yard.  Nothing like a lazy summer afternoon sitting on the deck watching them chase down cicadas.  Like aerial dogfights in miniature.

Always wondered what those massive "yellow striped hornet things" were called--now I know! They have been all over the place lately here in East TN.

I saw one crossing the road today while I was driving down 95 at seventy mph. Isn't it a few weeks early for the males to be out?

That big hornet is harmless...unless you're a cicada.

It's nothing compared to the tarantula hawk wasps in Southern California. Those look straight up prehistoric.

It got windy and the moth was having a hard time keeping aloft. It came in for a breather. Pretty damn impressive.

They're cool and leave you alone.  Had them at my house (before I moved).  The dug their little trenches in my edging,  I watched one drag a cicada across the lawn.  Saw another one on the sidewalk destroying a cicada.  Pretty neat.

I have a bunch of the cicada killers buzzing in and out from under my house. They live in the ground.

supposedly, the males don't have stingers and the females will only sting if you if you try to handle them. Very intimidating!

Those suckers are really moving some air when they buzz past your head.
