Have been putting off a badly needed kitchen remodeling project since I bought the house 4 years ago. Its time to do something. Got estimates of $30-45K. This includes new applicances but still seems in-fucking-sane. The cabinets alone are $18k. Granted I didnt give the designer any parameters other than its going in a 1650 square/ft home  typical of coastal Florida built in the late 1960's that has been updated modestly but is not some mini  McMansion. I paid $225k for the entire house (it is on the water) in 2010 so the idea of spending 20% on 1 room is not going to happen. A friend suggested I check out the kitchens from Ikea. I have been to one of their stores but never considered their stuff even semi permanent. Isnt it all pressboard consumer put together crap or do they actually have better quality stuff that might make sense for this home? I dont plan on staying here longer than 10 years more and I would like to cap my project cost at $20k including new frig, cook top, dishwasher.  microwave and over. Project will also include new tile flooring, cabinets, counter tops, light construction (moving a wall to expand kitchen), and light electical. No heavy plumbing.

Is $20k a reasonable budget?

Suggestions?

will you be doing all the work yourself?

Post pictures of your kitchen as is.  That way we'll know how many cabinets you're looking at.

ikea released a new kitchen line about a month ago, and currently have a 20% off sale going on for kitchen purchases over 4500.

I'm also looking at ikea cabinets for my remodel.

Gut kitchen yourself, have one of the ikea designers come out and measure.  I won't be going with ikea appliances, countertop, sink, or faucet.

Honestly it can probably be done if you could do it yourself.

18k for cabinets in that size house is insane.

You didn't say what type of counter top so I'll assume high end like granite. $20k didn't even cover the granite for my place. However I was able to do the walls, floors, base and upper cabinets for under $10k.However you still need appliances.

I found ripping the kitchen to the studs is easier than trying to retrofit/restore stuff into existing kitchen walls. You can run electrical and plumbing however you want. You have fresh sheet rock to paint or tile or whatever.

You can always go cheap now on counter tops and put the money into cabinets etc.  Then upgrade the counter tops when money permits.  I just think it's silly when people blow their budget on counter tops and then get cheap shitty cabinets.  Counter tops are much easier to replace.

There is better out there and pictures make it look a little off but these are all wood CNC cut with no MDF. Soft close and full extention glides. Just for an example they were around 5500 installed not finished. The 3cm group 1 granite is around 31-34 a square foot installed with any style edge.

I used a custom cabinet shop in TX for these.

ETA:
This one was well under the 18k mark and was higher because of the exotic stain grade wood they decided to paint over. They go around the corner out of view too.

This is good advice.

It is also much cheaper to reface cabinets than to replace, but assumes you like all of the layout and setup as is.

A counter point.

Unless this is the last home you will ever own, why build premium cabinet boxes to put your dishes in?
Economical boxes with nice fronts and the desired general appearance will satisfy 90% of most home owner needs.

This is what I am thinking. I won't he doing the work myself, no time. It needs to be decent but nothing premier of anything that will upgrade my house beyond the neighborhood. I plan to use mid grade granite top

We've had Ikea cabinets for 6 years now, they still looks great and have held up fine to daily use and abuse. Don't cheap out on the counter top material, the wife wanted butcher block and it's been a PITA to keep up. The next counter top we put in will be Corian or something similar.

Have you talked to Lowes or Home Depot?

They install, maybe not soups to nuts...  Might need to get a plumber etc...

I think the IKEA stuff is junk.
