Ten years ago, I dreaded going to work every day. It was depressing and affecting my health but at least I wasn't making much money at it. I'm in the best job ever for the past 10 years. Will vest at the end of this year for 50% of base pay. Already drawing social security so that's a bonus. Sometimes you have to make an honest assessment and hit the RESET button. Life is too short to be miserable. Good luck. I hope you find a more rewarding situation. As a bonus, I hope you make more money too! |

Back in the way back when I night clerked in an ER, the upper management was floating all kinds of corner cutting BS like clocking out if/when nights were slow, but be on no-pay standby to run back & punch in if patient flows ran up. The choicest idea was changing the job title names to bypass state regs, pay scales, etc, ehere RN would be "clinical partner" instead of nurse. Of course, it was a lead balloon & never got off the ground, but business management is an insufferable, echo chamber dwelling lot, so they had it all planned & ready to implement. Except no. But they were all about it. One thing commonly brushed off in the moment is the compounding, deleterious effect that persistent stress has on a person. Ultimately, all you have is your health. Material things can be lost & gained, but health is mostly a 1-way deal. You can survive & even grow under stress for a time, but after a while it becomes diminishing. At that nexus, things like extended cortisol (stress-related hormone) exposure will sap away your physical health (eg. Fatty liver) in ways that you can maybe only partially recover from, if even. IMO, the money &/or the employer isn't/aren't worth dying for. Reserve that sacrifice higher standards. |

Tried to get that point across to a manager when during a discussion about covering vacations/mandatory overtime, he said that employees should always be willing to do overtime and should be happy to be employed in their position, as when he was younger was always willing to do it. This was compressed 12 hr shift factory positions; 36 hrs one week, 48 hrs the next alternating. I told him not everyone is like him, and some people value their time off from work to decompress. Those positions worked compressed shifts so they have extra days off. You take that away from them by enacting mandatory overtime to cover on their days off because the company refuses to hire more people, why would they want to stay? |
