I'm too cheap to buy prepared food, so whats the correct mixture of sugar and water to keep these little critters buzzing around?
I know to add a couple drops of red food coloring.

Water to sugar ration should be 4:1 (1 cup water to 1/4 cup sugar). Use boiling water, then let it cool.
There is no need for food coloring.

It seems the birds around my house prefer the sugar water to the prepared food.

Add some cocaine and they'll keep comin' back for more. Though they may steal your stereo after a week or two of coca exposure.
