Alucard: A psychotic vampire who hunts down and destroys weaker vampires, shapeshifts, summons a demon dog to devour his prey, enslaves the souls of his victims and consumes them to fuel his powers, regenerates lost limbs, can phase through walls, teleport short distances, carries a pair of ridiculously powerful handguns that fire bullets made from a silver cross in an abbey and blessed to destroy the undead, and amuses himself by fucking around with his prey until he gets bored and utterly destroys them.

Edward: Sparkly homosexual with a pale complexion.

Yeah, there's no comparison between a REAL fucking vampire and this Twilight shit.

Says who?  It is still one of the key rules of patrolling as far as I know.  But I have been out since '05.

I think those movies should end with mass suicides committed by their emo fan base.

I think people would hate it less if they didn't claim to be vampires, because well they don't seem to be at all. They don't suck blood for sustenance. They go outside in the sunlight and don't die. They just seem to be really gay emo shit geared towards 13 year old girls. And all of the stupid girls, or gay guys, love it of course and fall in love with this character and forget its just entertainment and talk about it as if it was real or something  But yeah Blade to the rescue, ha, now that is something we can all enjoy

Whereas the things you mention attract regular girls, this shit movie series attracts emos by the shit ton.  This crap was pretty low on my radar until I came out of a movie theater and was waiting for my wife to get out of the bathroom.  Suddenly another movie lets out and piles and piles of pale, weird looking kids start coming out with tears in their eyes.  I look up, see that they were coming out of "twilight" and added it to my "gayer than gay" movie list.

You mean stand to, right?

It is no longer down out of context or for no reason, but is still proper procedure in the right context.  The problem the the '80s and '90s is it became more of a check the block game, with the reason and purpose forgotten - kinda like face paint.

When alerts are delayed and Soldiers reporting into offices or with hours of work in a motor pool - before what will become a non-tactical vehicle movement at most - are turned away at the Arms room by CSMs for not wearing face paint, the Army has... issues.  When stand to becomes a thing done at the same time every day, regardless of actual twilight... same thing.  I've seen plenty of both.

War has a way of putting priorities back in place, and those CSMs are relegated to making up bullshit on FOBs - but are only tolerated so much.

Dawn was when the French and Indians attacked, when the VC attacked, and likely remains the ideal time for the Taliban other groups to attack.  I am quite confident that units facing such reality have properly assessed the threat and arranged their defensive procedures appropriately.  No, nobody walks out of their CHU on an established FOB to stand along the fence for no reason.  Thank God.

I was referring to stand to and stand down. In fact, the part in red is how the subject came up, as the Taliban hit both units in Nuristan (the 173rd in 2008 and the 4th ID guys a month or so ago) at dawn––-kinda "old school". I mentioned stand to and stand down and got looked at funny. The LT said he'd heard of it, been taught it, but they didn't do it religiously just like you said.

I was a grunt so there wasn't really any "base" or FOB mentality when it came to stand to/stand down. If we were in the field playing Army you rolled out of your sleep just prior to dawn and assumed a firing position facing outward (okay, sometimes nodding off with your cheek on the stock of your M16, thinking "How stupid is this?"). At twilight you did the same. Keep in mind to that when I was in (see sigline) Vietnam still held sway over much of the Army's tactics. 'Nam and the ever-present threat of Soviet masses rolling across Europe's plains. I was in an infantry unit in Panama's jungles, so you can guess which of the two was more prevalent in our thinking.

My point was that given the Taliban's apparent "old school" VC/NVA-like tactics, it might merit a re-visiting of the issue. Obviously, as you suggest, units in the position to benefit from the practice are likely doing it, as the learning curve is rather steep!
