Just curious, how far do some of you guys drive to work?

I'd like to move eventually but I do sort of like my job and quite frankly probably won't find anything that pays better for my education and training. Also, I've been there for 16 years and have basically good benefits and vacation time that I'd be hard pressed to give up.

Right now I live within 5 minutes drive of work. No highway, all surface street driving. I couldn't imagine driving much more than that everyday. Some of the guys I work with drive as much as 45 minutes one way.

Just curious how far some of you drive each day for work.

Is it an enjoyable drive?

7 miles.
I'm lucky this time.
4/20/2003 5:55:44 AM EDT

24.6 miles one way, just shy of 1/2 hour.
That's my "quiet time", no kids screamin' and no bosses doggin'...so whoever you are, quit cuttin' me off! [pissed]

I work in the field (sales) and have two office that I work out of.

The first is about 25 miles away and it takes about 45 minutes in the morning and almost and hour in the afternoon.

The other office is 50 miles and takes about an hour, if traffic is decent.

62 miles oneway. One hour and ten minutes there and one hour and 20 minutes home. The traffic in the afternoon is worse so it takes the extra ten.565 from one end to the other plus alot of surface roads.

12 miles in 12 minutes.  10-11 stop lights and 70% freeway.  I think I've done it quicker, but that was under more than optimal conditions.

[#6]
I was driving an hour each way, 55 miles, for 2 years until I got laid off. I also did the same in Nevada, on that job I would drive 62 miles to the office, then as much as 500 miles a day for servicing office equipment.

It takes me 40 minutes. All but two and a half miles is highway. The traffic going west towards where I work is light until Cedar Point opens [:(!] I'm used to it, it's not to bad. Better than when I worked construction. At least it's to the same place every day.

7 Miles for me too.

[lolabove]I hate the C-P too.  (I think it raises the gas prices around here too)

4 miles to work.  4 miles back.  Maybe a mile or two when I go out for lunch.

... and I only use about a gallon of gas a week...

[:D]

I love my car

22 miles each way for me.

Less than 1 mile each way for my fiancee

4 miles to and from, lucky me.

We have people at work that commute two hours and over one hundred miles each way everyday.

I use to do 22 miles each way - then moved so now it's just 4 miles. That extra hour of time at home is hard to buy.

When I was living in Washington state I had to cross the Sound everyday taking two and a half hours each way for a nine month period. I would leave for work just before 4 AM and would get home around 8 PM. Gotta love the Navy. Homeported the USS Abraham Lincoln in Everett and the shipyard is over in Bremerton. But that's better then the ship prior where we were stationed in Alameda (San Francisco Bay area) and the shipyard was in Bremerton - we got to go home for 36 hours every two weeks for nine months [:(].

About 12 miles one way.  It takes me about 15 minutes to get to work two towns over. All secondary highways.
4/20/2003 7:11:37 AM EDT
[#15]
17.2 miles. 3 traffic signals, 70MPH speed limit 90% of the way. Almost no traffic.
4/20/2003 7:15:13 AM EDT
[#16]
25 miles each way.  About 45 minutes in the AM and 55 mins in the PM.  Time goes way up if I don't carpool.

Right now I drive 370 miles one way. That is about 5-1/2 hours driving time.I work a 4 day week though & get to be home three days.

20 miles, and it can take anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour, depending on the construction status of the high five interchange.

When I moved here, it was 7.5 miles from my driveway to the parking garage at work, and all of that was on east-west surface streets instead of north-south highways.

About 350 yards. I try to walk to work as much as possible.

Depends on where the job site is. Usually 25 to 50 miles  one way.

114 miles each way, mostly all highway. ileave at 4am and get home about 5pm when we are on 8 hrs. i put over 90,000 mi on my new truck since oct. 01.

Makes it hard to call in sick but since I own the place I call in whenever I want....sometimes I fire myself just to get rehired the following day.

Having fun

Not miles, but minutes.

10-15 minute drive to train station.
35-40 minutes on LIRR (railroad)
20 minutes on subway
4/20/2003 7:39:36 AM EDT
[#26]
Little less that a mile.  It takes the same amount of time to drive or ride my bike.  A little longer by car if I hit the light red.
4/20/2003 7:49:54 AM EDT
[#27]
26 miles each way. It takes between 30 and 90 minutes depending on my risk tolerance and the level of (in)competence of my fellow motorists.
4/20/2003 7:59:40 AM EDT

250 miles each day ...give or take..I work the construction, daa comrad, it is far..but it is work.

Egg-ZACKLY! Here in metro NY a 25 mile trip to lower Manhattan can take 90 minutes with the traffic.....not as bad as what I've heard of the California Freeways though...
4/20/2003 8:21:29 AM EDT
[#30]
About 3.5 miles, usualy takes 5 minutes.
4/20/2003 8:33:29 AM EDT
[#31]
57 miles on I-75 at times going from a blistering 90 mph to 4 mph.  Usually in less than 15 seconds and always in bumper to bumper traffic.

I'm at work as soon as I get in my truck. I hardly ever work at the same location two days in a row. Sometimes I drive 15 minutes to the site, sometimes 2 or even 3 hours, it just depends and yes I'm getting paid for the drive time.[chainsawkill]

100 miles one way.   lost job 2 years ago, found this job 6 months ago (only thing i could find).  economy is depressed in Ga.
4/20/2003 8:54:53 AM EDT
[#34]
I used to drive only 5 miles each way and it could take up to 45 minutes but I start a new job tomorrow, about 10 miles each way reverse commute, should  take about 15 minutes.
4/20/2003 9:01:11 AM EDT
[#35]
310 miles each way, and half of that is mountain driving.  You drive about 35mph for several hours when the roads are bad.

The company wants all of us to move to a shithole town where half the population is on welfare.  We are still considered temporary employees with few benefits.  Yeah, right.

At work, my shack is about 10 yards from my bedroom door.

Unemployed.  When I was working in Buffalo NY used to be 2 miles to one plant and .5 to the other.

I live way out so any job will be 13+ here.  My frieds stepdad drives everyday to and from Augusta to Atlanta about 140miles each way.  No shit.
4/20/2003 9:10:46 AM EDT
[#37]
13 mi. each way in a moderately large metropolitan area (Rochester NY). That said, traffic is not as bad as some that I've experienced elsewhere.
While I am hoping to put this behind me and going rural, I am equally hoping that I make it until I want to leave, and not beforehand as so many seem to have been forced to.
We sure do live in interesting times.

Last job I worked at I dorve 96 miles one way.  I could make the trip i alittle over an hour.  The return trip was worse. Took an extra 45 minutes just to clear boston in rush hour.

[#39]
I used to work in Detroit and my commute was 68 miles one way and about 1 hour 10 minutes when the traffic wasn't bad. Problem is that traffic seemed like it was always screwed up for one reason or another. My longest commute time there was 3 hours due to weather.

Now I work local and bought a house 8 miles away. I have learned to enjoy a simple 13 minute drive to work.
4/20/2003 10:52:00 AM EDT
[#40]
For all who travel more than 50 miles, I just don't know how you do it.

anothergene put it well: b[]That's my "quiet time", no kids screamin' and no bosses[/b]

I didn't even think about the traffic. I used to love to drive but now every little thing everybody else does that even remotely looks dumb makes me mad.

Dude, i don't even have to roll out of bed...until they page me.

Then it's 500-600 yards to campus, depending on whose office I have to visit.

About 100 feet. It would be closer if I had a smaller house or used a different bedroom.

miles and minutes; 42 miles, then 20 minute train ride. and reverse.
4/20/2003 11:19:41 AM EDT

If you travel 45 minutes each way to work it adds up to 9 (40hr) weeks per year out of your life.

... This is a stickler with me. Several of my colleagues commute upwards of 50 miles each way!

... What bullshit I say. That's 2.5 hours each working day you never get back. It's wasted time, wear & tear on your car, large gas bills, statistically increased risk of accidents and if factored into your $/hr it really reduces your net worth at work.

... I've been working at the same facility that I started at over 20 years ago. When I got hired on I planned on retiring with the Company and in-fact took into consideration my proximity for the very reasons mentioned above.

... 5 easy miles, no traffic jams, barely warms up the car.
4/20/2003 11:34:01 AM EDT
[#46]
66 miles every single day because I need the OT.
4/20/2003 11:35:17 AM EDT
[#47]
600+ miles every day.  Of course, when I am home, my job site is parked in front of the house.  I guess that is one advantage of being a truck driver.  I get paid to drive to work...
4/20/2003 2:23:13 PM EDT
[#48]
1 and 1/2 miles.  I hate driving a long way to work.
4/20/2003 2:29:39 PM EDT
[#49]
18 miles one way, mostly highway, takes me about 20 minutes in the morning, about 30-40 in the afternoon going home.
4/20/2003 3:03:38 PM EDT
[#50]
Either 8 Miles each way or 2500.  Needless to say I only make the long commute about 2 weeks in 3 or 4.  (two weeks out, one or two weeks home)  and my hotel is about 2 miles from work on the West coast (closer then my home-to-office route on the East Coast).

It also means that I only get to shoot when I'm home in PA since CA is nuts on guns and I cannot carry into work at either end.  Sigh
