Airsoft?

I have seen several references to people playing Airsoft, but for the life of me; I can't figure out how you'd do it.  Is it based on the honor system?  How do you know if you've been "hit"?  Is it like BB gun wars?

Is it like paintball only without paint?

Except they use clips.
