Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - House constuction question

My house was built in !976. Last year when I did some owrk I noticed something different. On top of the joist they put 2x10  and then put plywood on top of that. Most of the houses just put the plywood over the joist. Any idea why the 2x10's? or was this common practice back then?
