I found this video today on building a poor mans night vision.

I didn't see any FUArocks in the comments so I thought there might be a chance that it hasn't been posted here yet.
If it's a dupe, forgive me.................I thought it was cool. (Especially for thumps outside in the night.)

The idea is cool but that guy is so annoying, even with all his ingenuity. Everything is a "hack" to him.

Wouldn't that many LEDs cause a significant glow?

I wonder if Goodwill still has some of those old cameras?

Interesting , however i'm curious if it couldn't be easier to just find a viewfinder rather than taking one off of a camcorder. Goodwill already has a ton of em, so that'd be easy enough to get.

Wouldn't be too helpful if someone else has one , but would be a cheap NV alternative.

Looks like a poor man's version of these (got them for my kids two years ago... they actually work.)

PAh! Thats nothing! I took my Sony digital camcorder with "nightvision" and with 10 cents worth of tape i turned it into  night vision rifle scope!
Step one - Tape camera to top of Romanian AK type weapon.
Step two - flip out video screen
step three - Shoot gun at target, now where ever the hole appears on your screen that is your point of impact.
step four - take a sharpie and mark on your screen exactly where the hole is on the target, now you have a RETICULE!

It has both night vision AND with the zoom effect its a 4X scope as well!

Step five - take into cemetery at night, have fun!

I agree. If you can look past the dork the idea is great.

Sweet. It might not be tactical with the IR LEDs and all, but for civilian use that really works well for indoor use.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but you won't be able to see them, only the camera will. That or anyone else with Night Vision gear. But this isn't exactly for military use.

Now watch, shortly we'll be seeing propaganda video of Iranian troops using these jerry rigged devices.

I wonder if different wavelength or intensity would make a difference in that regard. I see they come in many different styles.

Maybe I should have put this in TEAM.

I don't want to help anybody out that doesn't need it.

That's right. They are infrared and invisible to the human eye. TV remote controls use IR LEDs, too, and you can't see the output.

You can pick up a small display from the CCTV supply shops - they're used to adjust CCTV cameras up on the ladder - about $70 IIRC.

pfft. No, it's not a big deal. There are Russian "starlight" scopes floating around all over the world. NV isn't that hard to get your hands on.

I was just making joke how they like to make bullshit propaganda about a new military technology they claim to have come out with, and it's really a piece of junk that doesn't really work that well anyway.

On those toy ones posted earlier, you can see a faint red glow from some of the IR LEDs.

I know this is off topic but arent these batteries the ones you use in most red dot scopes?  I didnt know smaller batteries where used to make bigger ones?!

It seems like, from my limited searching so far, that the higher frequency ones are not as easy to see glow with your eye. The ones in remotes are 940nm. The cheap ones in toys are less than 700nm. I don't have a very good understanding yet of all of this. I'm hoping an expert will roll in here and straighten us all out shortly.

Oh good...... I didn't wan't to see Achmidiniwackjob running up his credit card at Radio Shack and snatching up all the IR LEDs from under us.
