Ok, here is the story:

Nissan 2001 Maxima SE

On SOME start-ups the battery light comes on and my Passport 8500 shows 11.6 volts. After about 20 seconds the light goes off and the voltage pops back up to 13.6 volts.

It is like the alternator is NOT sending charge and then bang, starts sending again. This is NOT the Batt and Brake light thing.

After this started happening I replaced my 4 year old battery with a new Optima Red top and it is still happening. The car is in the shop right now, but I want to see if anyone else has had this.

Help me out guys!

sounds like the alternator or voltage regulator.....check the connectors on the back of the alternator for corrosion.  Next question:  How many miles on it?  Alternator brushes seem to last about 80K miles from my shadetree mechanic experience

78,211 miles..... hmmm, Brushes?  that sounds very likely.  Thank you!

And if there are any other theories out there, lets hear'em

It only happens sometimes?

Could be volt regulator, alt going out  or a computer glitch.

I short somewhere in the line could do that....but it would more likely happen MOST of the time tho.

Sister's 95 Maxima developed a problem with an intermittent battery connection, caused by a corroded connector on the + battery cable (I should say 'cables', since there are several of them that lead to the battery + post). The connector is just several inches downstream from the post, and likes to attract battery corrosion. IIRC, the dealer claimed that the entire cable a$$embly had to be replaced, so I just cut it out and soldered a solid connection instead.

EDIT: IIRC, one of the wires that goes through that connector is the output from the alternator - which might explain why you're only getting a charge part of the time.

BTW, if you haven't bookmarked it already, Maxima.org has an excellent user's forum.
