I built a garage. Garage is about 60' from house. Thought I'd like to have internet in the garage. Garage is steel framing with steel siding. I do seem to get a decent connection already to the wifi in the house, but I would like it to be a bit more reliable. Would you? A. Wireless access point outside of house pointed at garage? B. Cat 6 under ground to switch in garage? I have to rent a trencher later to run water supply line, so I think I could run in the same trench without having to dig two. Also - I do want to install some cameras to keep an eye on the place while I am away. You guys like the wireless ring cameras? |
| If you have to run a trench anyway, run a cable. And use fiber instead of copper CAT6. Fiber is actually cheaper these days (the cable itself--you'd still need SFP+'s, media converters, or compatible Ethernet switches on each end) and you'll get electrical isolation between the two buildings. |

Definitely cat6 in the trench. Hardwire all the things. Fiber would be fine, and may be cheaper, but the hardware needed to use it is not. Also, you may get electrical isolation between switched, but not between buildings. They're fed by the same electric. |

If you do CAT 6, make sure it's solid copper and not copper coated aluminum (CCA). Also they make direct bury CAT 6. You can do it with a shovel before trenching (if wanted).  
If you want cameras, get a PoE switch for the garage and then install PoE cameras. |

When you use it to pull in another wire, you pull in another string with it. |
