BTW, the device is a GPS datacollector (trimble TSCe running windows ce.net)

I'm connecting through a belkin serial port/usb adapter, since my laptop does not have a serial port. This is the first time I have used the adapter, however, the devices ARE talking; I've had this problem on 3 other computers in the past with the same device.

I'm not an expert in that sort of hardware at all, but if you've tried all teh windows/software answers, I'd try uninstalling the (COM) port you've attached it to, then reboot the PC and see if windows installs both at the same time?

Cheers

I tried a reboot. After about 20 more tries, I'm connected.

I can't help, but I can commiserate a little.

I use Microsoft ActiveSync for my pocket PC, and while it works fine, it'll lose the connection and be unable to re-establish it.  Sometimes it loses the connection after 30 seconds, sometimes after 30 minutes.  When it happens, the only way to re-establish it is to pull the pocket PC out of the cradle, and put it back in.

We've got pretty good tech people here, and they've just given up trying to fix it. Apparently it's just the way ActiveSync works with the DELL product.

I fucking hate microsoft

USB Serial adaptors will not work with all serial devices, at the hardware level. This is a problem with some stuff at my work. But a PCMCIA serial port card will work because it has all the serial hardware that the USB serial adapter doesn’t have.
This will work beter than a USB type device,

Never had a problem connecting an Ipaq to a PC; just this datalogger. But this is funny: our CFO was having trouble w/ her ipaq getting/staying connected. After pulling my hair out trying to help, on a whim I decided to disconnect the cable from her PC.....only to find she was double-connected using both USB and serial port. After unplugging one of them, it now works perfectly.

For the moment, this one is working.
