I bought my fiance some lilies tonight since she's sick and our cat nibbled on some of the leaves. He threw up once already. What's to come? No pics of fiance since i'm on my phone and i probably wouldn't anyways.

Cat owners need to be aware that having these flowers in your home can prove fatal. Lily poisoning causes acute kidney failure & if you suspect your cat has eaten any, prompt veterinary attention is of utmost importance.

What are the symptoms of lily poisoning in cats?

The first signs of lily poisoning occur 30 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion & include  vomiting, depression & loss of appetite.

Vomiting usually subsides a few hours after exposure but this doesn't mean your cat is making a recovery. As the toxin starts to affect the kidneys depression, excessive thirst (polydipsia) & lethargy will occur.  Acute renal failure usually occurs between 1 - 3 days after ingestion, and death will follow within 5 days.

How is lily poisoning treated?

Prompt medical treatment is absolutely vital, the sooner your cat sees a vet, the better. Even with veterinary attention there is no guarantee that your cat will survive, but the chances greatly decrease if treatment isn't commenced within 6 hours of exposure.

Treatment is supportive & includes intravenous fluid therapy.

Hopefully you're somewhere that has a 24hr animal hospital available... otherwise first thing in the morning would seem critical.

We don't have any emergency vet clinics that i know of. He threw up the small bits that he ate and seems fine. Anything we can do?

most will meet you at their clinic

Few times i have dealt with stuff like this they were pretty understanding and didn't charge more than a regular visit

Just talked to one of our friends that used to work for a vet clinic. She said to monitor him for the next 24 hours and if he gets worse to take him in. He seems like his regular self but if he starts acting funny we'll take him in tomorrow.

He's only vomited once so far. Normal other than that. I think he'll be okay. He only ate two or three really small pieces.

i think he's okay. No symptoms of poisoning currently and he's in his favorite spot watching the chickens outside.
