While trying to get my son to not be afraid after a bobcat encounter in our backyard this morning we turn around and see this.  After a cursory search on the internet I think it is a California Kingsnake but expert opinion is much appreciated.  Location mountain side of Scottsdale AZ

Thank you

Yep, California Kingsnake. Don't kill it, it eats mice and rattlesnakes.

Hell if I know.

So how about the bobcat story? Was it just in the backyard and your son saw it?

There's literally nothing that snake does that isn't beneficial to your property, that is unless you're a fan of rodent infestations and rattlesnakes. Then by all means kill it with fire.

Yes.  My son was outside this morning playing on the playscape and he looks up and there is, as explained, a giant cat with black spots watching him.  We have house cats so I asked him to compare the size and he said it was giant and just staring at him.  He runs in and tells me so i gather up a standoff defense device to check it out because I have seen them in the area but not this close to my house.

Whoa that's nuts.

It's an adventure everytime you go outside in the desert.

We have a California King that lives in our yard.

He likes to go up trees and steal Dove chicks out of the nest...

They are badass snakes.

Rattlesnake venom doesn't bother them.

Keep him happy and he'll keep nasty snakes away.

I don't know what kind of snake that is, but considering you are in AZ and it doesn't have rattles on its tail, I'd say it is a good one.

You're right, California King.  Good snake to have in your yard, will get the rodents AND the other bad snakes.
